Home and home with BYU is legit. Mullen has his reasons for playing road games at LaTech and it pays off in ways other than one game $.
Was about to say this. BYU isn't some non-tradition rich program. Hell IIRC, we just scheduled a home-home with them and we haven't done any of the road game stuff that Mullen has.
That said, State is a small school compared to others in the SEC and Mullen still has to fight a good deal harder for things than a lot of other coaches and programs in the conference. The scheduling he's doing may have everything to do with building a larger national footprint and letting kids know you exist. It becomes a lot easier to recruit someone if they have heard of you a couple of times or better yet seen you play live even if it's just a small game.

Playing at La Tech would get you no more exposure than playing at LSU. Same with playing at South Alabama.
The deal they had with UMass had serious potential but Mullen has never made it a point to recruit out of state hard....much less out of the South.

I was thinking more of the UMASS and Fresno games but even the Tech and South Alabama games could pay off if done right. State is building a brand from scratch and that means doing things the bigger programs don't have to. I don't know what Mullen has or hasn't done to help with that or what his recruiting plan has been but those are recruit rich areas that State could steal a recruit or two from by having a presence there.
As an aside, I do know that State is trying to build it's footprint. Not long ago, someone took a screencap of a State ad on a Vol Board. It was a pretty funny "what the hell?" moment at the time but I also know how ad placement works and the ad buys are likely aiming for any all football related boards, blogs, articles etc. in the South as 1st priority and then elsewhere as a 2nd priority. Point being, State is marketing themselves and attempting to expand their brand.

They definitely are trying to expand their footprint. I just don't see the benefit in some of the places they go.
USA and La Tech are close enough to still get a lot of MSU exposure. We agree on playing teams like UMass and Fresno. Going down to play USF or UCF would be pretty solid. I could see playing Georgia Southern as pretty solid exposure with MSu only playing in Athens once every 7 years. I know they played Ga Tech recently but it would still help out after a few years.
Umass might have actually had a negative effect with only having a couple thousand in attendance. Great idea....just didn't really work out.

I'm fairly certain the UMASS game was the result of UAB ending their program. We had to find a new opponent. We've had a couple of situations that changed our schedules. Our national exposure has grown... a lot because of Dak. I like playing BYU i just haven't been able to make it out there yet. I keep meaning to go on the road but something seems to pop up every year. We have NC State in 2020... and in regards to La Tech... we have always had a good relationship with that university in sports.

That's a solid OOC game.
But you can't pat yourself on the back too much for that because the SEC requires you to play a P5 opponent. Same with us playing Cal.

State actually travels very well.
We had 6,000+ at Gillette Stadium for the UMASS game.
They had no home support whatsoever so the crowd was only about 13-14K , half of which was from the road team located a 1,000 miles away.
I was there and we had a great road crowd for that game.
The home team failed to do their part.
Mostly this is a 2-1 deal on these types of situations. UMASS is coming to Starkvegas in 2017 and 2020, so it is still to our advantage.

Its not about exposure anymore. A team in Mississippi can get exposure in Massachusetts without playing there.
Its about dollars and cents and making the best decisions to stay competitive in the SEC with half the budget of a school 90 miles to your East.
As fans we can bitch and moan about it, but if you have ever been in the decision making desk, you know what it comes down to.
We can pay Louisiana Tech $900,000 a season to come to Starkville for three straight years, or we can pay them $600,000 to come twice and play 4 hours away from our campus in a road game and save $1.1 million. We can then pay our assistant coaches more and maybe not lose them as often.
We can pay UMass $1 million for a buy game, or we can pay them nothing and play a road game in an NFL stadium in a great city, save that million and add some amenities that other SEC schools have that we may not have.
We can sign a deal with Nike and be just another Nike school, or we can sign a deal with adidas and be one of their top schools.
Those are all little decisions that have helped MSU go from 8 of 9 last place finishes to 7 straight bowl games.

Given the picture posted in this thread.....that claim is incredibly hard to believe. I don't doubt that you guys had half of the attendance.
ESPN says attendance was 13,074. I'm sure that's just tickets sold and not actual body count.

You're ignoring the cost of shipping, feeding, and boarding MSU players, staff, band, cheerleaders, boosters, etc. That is a shite ton of money
And don't forget the HUGE amount of money that MSU makes on ticket sales and the money fans spend in Starkville.
Adding up all of that and it is WELL over the $1.1 million dollars that you think you saved. Not a very strong argument.

agreed on both points.

The 13K was the actual attendance.
Very disappointing to say the least.
Stadium seats about 68K and it was about 20% full (sparse).
So I don't think the 13K reports was inflated. Still very disappointing especially on UMASS's part.
It was a great experience for us. My wife and I had a great time at the CBS Scene adjacent the plaza on the N end of the stadium prior to the game.

FWIW, Starkville the city is so shitty because it not only fails to embrace the fact that it has an SEC university, it fights against it. I could not care less if that cesspool gets tax money.
One of the leading candidates for mayor wants to impose a tax on all MSU students.

you should probably seek help for your anger issues maybe lay off the sauce and stop beating the wife.

Funny...we always get accused by MSU fans as inflating our attendance.
It's pretty standard to announce tickets sold. Unless it specifically says "actual attendance", then it's safe to assume that it is reporting tickets sold.

Oxford was the same way for a while. 20 years ago, they would have never come close to working out the deal they did for the Swayze expansion.

We picked up UMASS at the last minute because Tulane canceled on us.
I enjoyed the trip very much. I used a friend's place in Newport that week and drove up for the game. The UMASS crowd was pretty disappointing. I thought the MSU crowd was OK for a "small" game that far from home.
I understand, but don't like, the games at UAB, MTSU, Troy, USA, and LaTech.
BYU is a solid opponent and shouldn't be included with those games at all.

Isn't the "Tax on MSU Students" a gas tax that everyone will pay? The point of the tax is that lots of people come to Starkville for sports events and school that pay no city residence tax, because they live in dorms or outside city limits, which is used for road upkeep in the city. If it's a cent or two/gal of gas then it's not the big deal people are making out if it. I'm pretty sure any tax directly levied on someone just for being a student at MSU would be illegal.
Calling it a "MSU Tax" would be more appropriate. All the city is after is a little extra revenue from people coming into town for events. Hell Louisville has had a MSU Tax for decades. frickers have made several hundred bucks from me on speeding tickets from that fricking cop that camps under the Hwy16 overpass.

The picture in the earlier thread did not show the entire stadium.
Yes it was sad that only 13K were at the game. But I think that was pretty accurate based on what I saw by actually being there.
The overall trip for the fans like myself that went was fantastic.
