Rob Pate - former Auburn safety and writer for Auburn247

quote:

I wrote this after the 2011 Iron Bowl blow out that resulted in defensive coordinator Ted Roof's firing and feel it's applicable today:

"I still wake up the day after an Iron Bowl loss thankful I'm on the Auburn side of the rivalry. I know many fantastic Alabama people that love their university every bit as passionately as I do Auburn...as they should. But love of Alabama is easy love, cheap love, lazy love. The enormity of their sidewalk alumni proves this point. To love Auburn, you must first experience Auburn...and once you do it's in your blood forever. Sometimes, the Auburn football program breaks our hearts making love a difficult exercise. But, the stronger the winds blow, the fiercer the attacks, the more persistent the ridicule...the more solid we become, the sweeter the ride is to the top, the more united we all are! As goes the old proverb, "Good timber does not grow with ease, the stronger the wind...the stronger the trees!" "

quote:

No matter the result of any Iron Bowl, any season-both grand or grotesque, I will stand firm in my resoluteness to Auburn University. I will be proud of the close-knit family that defines who we are. I will do my part to help Auburn be successful by supporting the university, its colleges, its students, its athletics programs with my attendance, my involvement, my treasure. Auburn is not an idol in my life, if it ceased to exist tomorrow I could move on and function just fine, but Auburn represents an ideal of the very tenants that drive me and have molded me into who I am. You can shake a shaker, sing a song, and even claim fifteen national titles, but Alabama will never get who we are. They will surely defeat us sometimes on the football field again, but they'll never defeat our enthusiasm for our school, our program, and our decisions to be Auburn men and women. They may see us as little brother and I think that is just fine. Big brother lives life petrified that little brother will outshine him someday. We have been there many times before and we'll be there many times again, and it will be sooner rather than later.

Yep.

They think it's honorable. We think it's funny.

Fanbases have certain coping mechanisms when they can't accept someone is better

Alabama - blames themselves and their own mistakes
LSU - blames refs or Les Miles
Auburn - gives themselves the moral high ground "at least we're better people"

I gotta say, AU fans are a whole different breed of folks. So are the Aggies. I think the differences are what make college football so much fun.

Perfect summation of all 3 fanbases and a clear picture of why each program is where they are.

LSU - always bitter, looking for ways to deflect - instead of fixing the real problem - themselves.

Auburn - content to always live in a shadow, as long as they measure up every once in a while. Everything revolves around Bama.

That is why - over the entire history of all 3 programs - for as long as all 3 programs exist - Bama will be on top.

It's what we do. We disrespect our opponent. You didn't beat us, we just played poorly. You got lucky. I can admit that it's immature, just as there are a few Aubies who can admit what they're doing right now, or what they did after losing to UGA.

The most annoying thing about Auburn to me is this holier than thou attitude after each loss.
