Absolutely agree. All spurrier had to do was hang in there for 6 weeks. In the grand scheme of things, 6 weeks is an extremely short amount of time.

The game passed him by, guys.

This is my opinion.

I hope he doesn't come out and tell us he is in love with Caitlyn Jenner, that would be more than I could take.

Spurrier just doesn't have it in him anymore to right the ship. Nothing wrong with that. He's already given us so much.

dudes a walking talking, living legend, imagine the difficulty of being the person (his boss) of having to have the conversation concerning "an imminent resignation at the end of the season".

There are certainly two sides to this coin, on the one had you have a living legend coach that's done more for your program than anyone by the longest shot and on the other you'ed like to try and ramp off of that before the decline continues much further.

He clearly thinks that there are other coaches on their team that can do it better, so he's passing the torch to them to do what he can't. It seems he doesn't want to hold the team back, at least that's what I gather from it.

I don't agree all the way with that type of approach, but it's better than doing nothing about the issue. He feels he's lost it, so he takes himself out of the picture. Somewhere along this season it finally hit him.

So what's the reason?
Reason is obvious. His team sucked (he said as much post game about players falling down without getting hit) and he couldn't do anything about it. He's probably tired of listening to all the conversation about who the next coach will be, and he wanted to quit on his own terms instead of looking like Mac Brown.

Kudos to the legend. Would have been glad to have seen him at LSU at some point.

I totally agree. He probably talked with administration and said that he would probably retire after this season, and they didn't cry and beg him to stay, so he just decided that he would take his toys and go home now. He could have gone out with dignity. He could have announced his retirement and said that it would start after this season, and then SC could have gone on and gotten another coach and been ready for recruiting, but no he had to be selfish and make it only about him, as he has always done.

That's what it sounds like, and if true, he really has treated his players poorly IMO.

That's a cop out. No other possible head coaches on the staff. He just doesn't want an extra 4-5 losses on his resume. He can't stand sucking, and is leaving others to deal with his mess immediately rather than taking responsibility for his creation.

Yep. I heard people calling in to the local radio here this morning call him courageous. These people are smoking crack. He, like everybody else, sees one maybe two wins left on the schedule. The thought of losing to Vanderbilt was to much for him to bare, so he is bailing on his team. This, after all that bullshite he spoke during the offseason, and his called press conference. If would be pissed if I were a South Carolina fan.

I'm not the least bit surprised at his decision. Its all about his legacy, and losing to Vanderbilt wasn't in his plan.

Well I think it's a little foolish to make such a drastic assumption about something you know nothing about. But that's just me. Anyways, what good would it do to stay? If he doesn't feel like he's furthering the team at all, what's the point in sticking around for fun and goofing off when the program could be searching for a replacement now?

If he admits that he's leaving because he thinks he's lost it, then that right there is taking responsibility. There's no need to stick around to confirm what's already be confirmed. It won't prove anything more about this season failing, he'll only waste everybody's time sticking around just to look good on his way out.

I get that you're a Georgia fan so naturally you'd be asshurt towards Spurrier, but you're deliberately looking past the positive potential outcomes from his early retirement in order to validate your hate for him. I love it.

Tea leaves are fairly easy to read on this--Spurrier did not want to contend with the death by a thousand cuts he rightfully saw coming--and he didn't have to, so he played his trump card right back at Tanner.

Dude got some criticism from the powers that be and quit in an immature huff.

That was my guess the second I heard about his sudden retirement and nothing I've heard since has changed my mind.

Great coach - but he's always been a brat.

It does show his character. He's quit on his team in mid season. I have come to like the "old & improved" Spurrier as he's always been funny & entertaining. But as for the former HBC,this is completely within his character back then. He was great when he was winning & running up the score every chance he got, but as soon as he ran into some bump in the road, he bitched & complained like the a-hole he was back then.
