Steve Spurrier's reason for retiring. [NOW CONFIRMED]

"Athletics director Ray Tanner was at practice on Monday night. I was told that Spurrier had a conversation with Tanner on Monday morning about his future. I don’t know the exact details of the conversation but was told that by the end of the conversation, Tanner felt as though Spurrier’s retirement was coming sooner rather than later. Following Monday practice, Spurrier spoke with a group of players, but it was not the entire team. He told the group that he felt as though he was unable to make them better and he was going to give his assistant coaches the opportunity to make them better. He told the players that there are several people who felt as though he should retire and that’s what he was going to do. The message Spurrier delivered wasn’t very direct and somewhat cryptic. I spoke to multiple players who did not feel like Spurrier was retiring effective immediately, but was going to announce his retirement at a later date. That was what they felt Spurrier’s message meant, but an interim head coach is expected to be named on Tuesday morning."

Speculation is something we at South Carolina do best.
I think it's obvious Spurrier just doesn't have it in him anymore to right the ship. Nothing wrong with that. He's already given us so much.

That's what it would seem. If this is true, then it doesn't seem like he believes that he can further this program anymore as the head coach.

If that's what it is, you certainly have to give him credit for doing what's best for the team instead of just hanging on and on. Shows a lot of character.

So translation. He is taking his ball and going home like a pussy. This is typical Spurrier. The administration had a legitimate talk with him and he acted like a bitch and quit. This is not a surprise to me at all and it is a perfect ending to his career because he has always been a crybaby.

Sounds like Spurrier just doesn't think he can do it anymore and wants to let someone who might can, try. Regardless, IMO he should have announced his intentions to retire and finished out the season. It's not like an assistant is going to turn this dumpster fire around at this point in the season. Spurrier owes his staff, players, and the fans more than quitting on the spot mid-season. That's some Bobby Petrino shite

Spurrier said that he'd retire when he was no longer a benefit to the University. I guess he felt like he was at that point.

At least he was cognizant enough to realize he wasn't getting it done and there was no reason for him to ride out a season that could at least partially be salvaged. And let's the school get a head start on a coaching search before anymore heads roll.

how so? They have two wins left on their schedule and already have 4 losses. They still have yet to play Florida, Tennessee, A&M, or Clemson. They may not even beat Vandy. The only for sure win they have left is against the Citadel. It would take a miracle just to make a bowl game.

Surely you mean the character of a cry baby bitch. Quitting midseason is a horrible lesson to teach young men.

The game passed him by, guys. Sad but inevitable for any coach. At least he recognized it before tanking the rest of USCe's season.
