It's a legit thread. Being devastated doesn't preclude us from speculating on the future of our program.

I know it seems soon to talk about this but my heart has been broken all morning over the Leach news and I just want to think about something different.

It can't be too soon. There is a time and a place. That's the unfortunate way of life today.

Fact is, recruiting will not end, nor the bowl game. MSU has to move forward.... that doesn't mean you leave behind Leach.

We have no AD. Do we let the interim AD do a big coaching search? Do we hire an AD first and let him do it? That’s question number 1.

You will have one within a week right? I thought I read MSU was conducting the final interviews this week.

Question 2. Who could we realistically get at this point that would be decent?

Some say promote our DC Arnett to HC for a year and reassess. Now he has proven to be a great DC but is only 36 years old with only 4 years as a coordinator. There’s a lot a head coach does that would be a big step for him with that little experience. Also you’d have to give him at 3-4 year contract. The 1 year idea would devastate recruiting. This is a high risk/high reward type hire. He would need to hire 2 good coordinators and once again, who is available?

If we go looking for a coach who is available?

Who ever you hire... They need to retain Arnett. His buy out is high for a reason.

He has the ears of the players too. recruits well.

Joe Judge - former Giants head coach, current QB coach at New England. Didn’t do great at the Giants but doesn’t mean much. He played at MSU and was a graduate assistant there. Could be a solid hire with NFL offensive experience that could do something with most of our offensive production returning, and NFL offense isn’t much different than the air raid. If Arnett would stay as DC I could see this working.

Who else could be a potential hire? I saw Kingsbury mentioned on the CC board but I’m not sure about that.

You would be foolish to move away from what Leach built. You go get a Leach tree guy. If not, you will have a alot of guys leave.

Every QB you have and are about to sign is there due to Leach and his system. They have all stated it's why MSU over others. Switch and some move on. And those guys are record breakers in HS.

Riley Lincoln if you can get him.

We aren’t poaching Lincoln Riley from USC

Holgerson is a reasonable option. Or Promote Arnett and Spurrier Jr and let them continue under the same system

Maybe the the most reasonable outcomes.

I really hope that if so, he has grown up enough to not flame up the rivalry. That was not good before. He's a good coach and should be above those petty things now.

No, you do not want him. He is the shiny thing in the coon trap. He looks interesting but he's only going to bring a world of hurt. His offensive philospohy is for WRs to just run whatever and the QB tries to get them the ball. He does nothing except backyard football.

That's what MSU has done under Leach.

That’s basically the system. I guess Longo not a bad choice.

Agreed. Arnett is the guy now.

Not to insinuate there is a silver lining, but Arnett seems well positioned. It's hard to ignore the parallel with the situation Pat Fitzgerald took over at Northwestern, which has obviously served NW very well.

Arnett’s mentor Rocky Long is the DC at New Mexico. Arnett played for him at NM and coached under him at SDSU. Hire him as DC/associate HC. Arnett surely will still run the defense. Long helps handle the day to day. Hire someone with an air raid background who can recruit as OC.

“It may be a one year deal like the John L. Smith year at Arky”

There is probably a better example out there to use as a selling point if you are trying to convince anyone to go with Arnett in the interim. I thought it was a good idea at the time but it backfired like a MF.

No Mullen.
No short term intermediate fix.
If Arnett then as full time, perhaps risky with no prior HC experience, but gut says no.
We are SEC football, so hire someone of that caliber.

I like the idea of letting Arnett being the head coach for 2023. After next season, the new AD should have time to assess things.
