apparently if a high school student from certain northern states has a 3.5 gpa and 30 act score they get free tuition and room at nick Saban U. Is this good?

They are aggressively recruiting those Northern dollars. Not sure it is such a bad idea. They have name value and discount from the Us around here. When a flight is 300-400 there is a lot to be said for affordability

The problem is they are out pricing the average Alabama Family with the tuition hikes. All those out of state students will leave AL in their rearveiw mirror after they get their degree. All those buildings, roads and other infrastructures were built on the backs of AL taxpayers, now their state schools are catering to educating kids from everywhere else. A product of ego and a desire to be big.

Even if this were true (it's only true to an extent) how is this any different than any other university? College graduates follow jobs. I know several UA grads from Georgia that moved to New York when they graduated. They're set to move back to Birmingham in the next few months

In state enrollment has stayed pretty consistent.

And its easy for students from Alabama to get scholarships as well. I got half tuition for making a 28 on the ACT in 2006.

Isn't that true for in-State students too? It was at one time.

This is silly. Alabama's cost of tuition is about $600 per year more than Auburn's.

It's a double-edged sword. UGA has a similar issue, though we don't have to go out of state as much (though we seem to be getting a ton of kids from Texas and North Carolina). Rather, the ATL metro area is so overflowing with transplant families from the North that our alumni base in places like New York, DC, Boston, San Francisco, Dallas, etc are really growing. The downside is that these are kids that weren't raised ot be die hard UGA fans and after college, they don't have much reason to hang around Athens unless they stay to work in Atlanta (and to be fair many are because Atlanta is steadily on the rise in a number of industries). Still, it's not the UGA of the 80s or 90s where a lot of the in-state students are from native Georgia families.

It is called diversity and Alabama has not excelled at it in their past to say the least. Nice to see them finally grasp the concept.

There are many wealthy Yankees at UA now. This is sadly true of all SEC universities. The administration are elitist Leftists, so naturally they would like to distance themselves from the south. Although I don't think your scholarship information is correct, after looking at the website.

Because when you expand your student population to the numbers we have seen in recent years, you have to build more dorms, schoolrooms, roads, traffic light etc. Since High Education has not had funding increased by the State Legislature in recent years, those cost are passed on to the students. Those out of state students will gladly pay the increase because they are usually supplemented by those scholarships or they can not get into their own state schools. The instate student families continue to see tuition increase and are suffering because of this growth. They are the ones who will most likely contribute to the future taxbase after graduation, so out pricing them serves zero benefits to the state. The State of Alabama has become an education mercenary similar to the University of Phoenix, and people are afraid to challenge the PTB because of the success of the Football Programs.

This is a State problem, not just a UAT problem.

I can picture you sitting in a trailer yelling about how everybody that doesn't count to 11 using their fingers is an elitist leftist.

Can you find numbers that compare the increase of tuition at UA and AU over the past 10 years to other schools? Tuition has increased everywhere, so do we really know if it's because of the growth?

Jobs that our shite state government can't create. Huntsville is the only area that's done well getting jobs for the 21st century.

In actuality, my opinion is based on years of interacting with university administrators. It is readily apparent that the highest ranking among them are "champagne socialists." But anyone who doesn't share your opinions is, of course, ignorant white trash. Surely people cannot come to conclusions different from your own while simultaneously being educated and from a respectable social class. No elitism there at all.

And the Left wonders why it performs so poorly with its former blue collar base. Might it have something to do with the fact that it openly hates them and has derided them at every turn for years?
