I prefer the option of having sauce or not.
And part of the equation of that list is BBQ joints per capita. We are pretty high up there, and that doesn't surprise me.
Crappy BBQ doesn't last too long here. Too much competition.

I'm talking about Austin, TX. As far as Springfield, MO is concerned, we've most definitely stepped up our game. We have great dry rub BBQ here. But I wouldn't say were famous for it or claim it's the best in the country...yet.
Another example of Missouri being known for BBQ.

Agree on TX bbq being beef bullshite. I regularly visit Texas, and have been nothing but disappointed every time I've tried BBQ. It's all chopped beef and brisket. No business calling themselves BBQ.
The only BBQ worth eating are ribs, pulled pork, and chicken.
Memphis not winning first place is total bullshite.
Starkville's got some damn good BBQ places. I understand it's not going to be on that type of list - but it's what you should eat when you visit here.

disregard this list.
Has Sassy Red's as the best in Fayetteville, and Springfield, MO is on the list.

Almost everyone I have ever met has said they were underwhelmed by KC BBQ. It does not live up to the hype the locals/food network gives it.

I have eaten in most cities on that list. First of all, NC BBQ sux. I think one of the most underrated cities for good BBQ is Birmingham.

Latarian,
BBQ cashew chicken is coming soon to a Chinese joint near you (I bet most ranters have no clue what we're talking about)...

bullshite beef BBQ?!!
WTF is happening is this damned thread. Everyone must be joking. The next thing I'll read is nonsense about how sauce is better than dry rub...
Idiots.
Holy shite! I actually agree with Mizzoukills. I just feel dirty now!
BBQ is all about the pig, and dry rub is the best method!
Smothering good BBQ with sauce should be a felony!

The barbeque in Gainesville is okay, but nothing spectacular. The 3 places they mentioned aren't the greatest, but they'll do.
top 10 is a stretch though. But it isn't bad like LA or San Diego.

How kansas city or memphis are both not top three much less on the list is beyond me.
Texas BBQ is not the barbecue capital of the world... neither is any one of these shitty BBQ cities on the list.

LA and San Diego has shite for BBQ. That's ridiculous. I lived in San Diego for a couple of years and your statement is completely false.

Dreamland is highly overrated IMHO. Just my experience. Ribs were tough and dry. I was disappointed

Ribs made in Austin, TX are done to perfection. The only place I've eaten better ribs (other than the ribs I make on the big green egg) was in Folly Beach, SC.

Is this a joke? No Memphis? No Kansas City? Yep,has to be a joke
and No Lockhart, Texas. Yup. A joke
Anyone who thinks the fine art of BBQ is somehow limited to baby backs and pulled pork does not know what they are missing.
Try the Brisket at Blacks or Smittys or the other two BBQ joints in Lockhart and get back to me.
And to whoever was talking about BBQ w Tex Mex sauce...you have not had Tx BBQ. At a good place if they put sauce on your meat it means they hidin something.

There are only a couple of places in Dallas that have BBQ that is worth a shite. I've never really understood this, but it is a fact. If you base it on DFW, you are going to get a crappy sample of true texas Q.
One of the best just made it to diners drive-in's and dives though. It is run by a guy from The Citadel of all places!? He does brisket right. Pecan Lodge.
There are a few second tier places around DFW imo, but none do the meat justice like Hill Country or Houston BBQ. There are also a few places in small towns that are really famous like Lockhart(or black's) or Luling. There is a Cooper's (original in Llano) and it is not bad.
The guys that go to the effort to make coarse ground pork sausage in natural casing and then smoke it are artists. The aholes that dry the meat out and wrap it in foil/plastic wrap, and then re-heat it the next day do a serious injustice to BBQ.
When you visit A&M, we have a newcomer to the scene and he does a great job. No tables so eat in your car. Fargo's BBQ.
The best in the state IMO is still Louie Mueller's in Austin. You can wait up to 2 hours just to get in.
