I know where you are going with this but I don't think intelligence defines the entire picture. I believe Orgeron is an intelligent person and obviously very knowledgeable about football but he is not well spoken which a trait he shares in common with Les Miles. And frankly, I am a bit surprised that LSU would hire another coach who is probably perceived by many as not very intelligent due to limited public speaking skills.

Most coaches sound like a cliche echo-chamber. You know, relative to the process that is required to maintain the focus and put forth the effort to become an effective speaker, aiight?

They're not ambassador statesmen, they're PE coaches.

And for the record, most of South Louisiana would beg to differ on your opinion of being well-spoken. I'd wager that Ed O is in the top .1% of St. Rose, LA natives in the ability to navigate a press conference. They think he's a god.

I can't really tell. You need to be able to understand what one is saying to know if he is saying intelligent things.

Hard to make adjustments when the plays are there but the execution isn't. Dropped passes, dumb penalties, etc. You only get a few opportunities

Eli GoldfingerSerious question: Do you consider Ed Orgeron to be an intelligent man? by Eli GoldfingerI really can't figure him out. I never thought Les was intelligent. LSU fans embraced the unintelligent way he came across as 'quirky', but I'm pretty sure that deep-down everyone thought he was a dum-dum. But I can't get a good read on Eaux. I won't knock his accent, because - despite holding down a professional job -I probably sound as country as a butterbean sandwich to most non-southerners. It could be that I don't have a lot of Eaux press conferences to reference. What are your opinions?

Wrong on both counts.

A.
Miles has a degree in Economics from the University of Michigan.
And if all you ever heard were sound bytes from Miles' halftime exits with Holly Rowe, or if the media asked him a question that he didn't want to elaborate on, then you don't know the real Miles.

Miles' speeches at the TAF Sports Banquets, on the Les Miles Radio Show, on national one-on-one features, etc. showed his actual eloquence with the spoken word. Even his veiled tirade at Herbie when he wrongly announced that Miles was going to Michigan before the 2007 SECCG was a thing of beauty.

B. Ed Orgeron has a very deep voice, but if you actually listen to his press conferences, his "accent" is not even close to what Bobby Hebert's is or Justin Wilson's was.
It amazes me that people somehow equate a deep voice with French Acadian, when the man, if anything, has more of a NOLA accent than Cajun.
He also has a college degree and has coached in the Pros and college.....and is regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation.......

What do you want, Shakespeare or Einstein on the sidelines with the headsets on?

Ed Orgeron is what Larry Zybsko called Arn Anderson: Anthropomorphic Man. His intelligence is outside the sphere of intellect, and entirely in the realm of neanderthal survival.

Which, incidentally, is what football is all about.

So yes, properly understood, Ed Orgeron is an intelligent man. An intelligent Anthropomorphic Man.

Another serious question:

Could a really intelligent person be a successful CFB coach? How long before they became too introspective and just threw their hands up to the meaningless banality of billions of dollars being dedicated to a game. Or why we still use yardage chains with all of the technology available? Or why fans of the Tigers yell War Eagle?

To me, he is intelligent enough to recognize that other coaches are better at doing their specialty than he is. He will hire people that are great at what they do and let them do their job. Les never learned that. Coach Saban, is a good example of someone who recognizes his on strengths and weaknesses. Coach has learned the hard way. He has taken his lumps. He believes in working as a team. And that is very smart.

Well he makes 3.5 million a year and has coached ball at some impressive organizations. You can't be a dumbass and land jobs like that. He's intelligent, he just speaks a bit different.

After he took over for Les two things were said that I paid attention to.

One: Coach O said he learned from his mistakes at Ole Miss interfering with every aspect of everything going on. He said that led to his success when he took over at USCw.

Two: Some of the LSU assistant coaches said Coach O let them do their job and as long as what they were doing was working, he stayed out of it. They said before Coach O they had to clear every single move with Les, which explained why LSU was always confused at the line and calling needless timeouts.

Actually, yes.

During his interviews he has a fluid nature about his responses. Few dumbish pauses and such.

I also think his path is one that is not necessarily based on ignorance or stupidity. Much of his dips/failures have been the results of an overly emotional person mixed with too much animalistic intensity. He's not stupid.....he is intense on a basic level.

It's too early to dismiss him......to be fair.

Everyone can write an O-led LSU squad off, but there is the very real possibility a lot of crow will be served......granted, they may fail as well. We shall see.

He probably is around average for the south, which means no, he isn't really book smart.

But hell, he went from snorting coke to making 3.5 mil a year. Got to be doing something right.

Agreed.

I was just thinking about Kevin Wilson getting canned at Indiana. Apparently, he and Mullen were our 2 finalist for coach last time. Whichever national search firm we hired must have determined that we needed to hire a real prick to turn the program around
