They have a lot of sidewalk fans here in FL. They don't have a lot outside of FL but most SEC schools don't have a ton of sidewalk fans outside their state, either.
eta: I'm in no way saying they should be in the SEC.

Like I stated they dont have many that actively watch or follow sports. They have many that say "go canes", buy a jersey and thats about as far as they go. Their base, even in Florida, is minute in comparison to the several other schools.

You would be surprised

Upvote, this is a good offseason realignment thread.

Miami, as a relevant program, is extinct.
Folks were saying this back in 1995-1997 as well after the NCAA penalties and Butch Davis proved them wrong.

Maybe they had the good sense to realize there is no way they outbid the Agies if the Aggies want their Coach.

Donna Shalala wasn't there back then.
Keep in mind, it's been 12 years since Miami finished in the top 10. The longest they went in the 90s was 5 or 6.

All of that doesn't matter. If they go on another 3-5 NC in 10 year run, the playoff money and air time would off set any issues they have in selling out a stadium. They are like USC. Both set in a hot bed of talent, and one coach can turn them around quickly.

Miami in the 1950s wasn't Miami. Who knows how it would have turned out had they joined back then? They'd most likely be similar in the SEC today as Tulane would be, should they have remained in the SEC.

That is absolutely true. Hell, I'm a student down here right now and that is as far as my fandom goes.

Yeah but the problem is getting that one coach when the administration doesn't want to put the resources into it.
There is a reason that Arkansas has a better coach than Miami in 2015. In today's football you have to pay to play.

Great find, OP. I didn't know the SEC wanted to expand in the mid-50s.

Al Golden is a very good coach, the fact that he hasn't won at Miami yet indicates something else is off. They play in a terrible stadium in a terrible location almost an hour away. They should at least work out a deal to play at Marlins Park

Used to be Auburn's official name. It was generally called Auburn though, akin to U of California being known, most commonly, as Berkeley

This. The problem with Miami isn't coaching. It is the commitment to the football team. The facilities have been piss poor for almost 2 decades. They used to win big in spite of a lack of facilities when facilities weren't such a determining factor in recruiting. Golden is improving things, but the problem Canes football faces is with an administration that just doesn't give a damn about the football program and some that don't even want Miami to have a good football program.
Miami is a smallish private school with top notch academics, expensive tuition, and a great medical and law school. The medical school has a 2% acceptance rate with the average enrollee carrying a 3.8/4.0 GPA. The law school is the best in the state and most expensive. The current Miami administration doesn't want to be known for its football program like it used to be. Until that changes, Miami football isn't ever going to be "back".
We all know how good they can be if they get the kids in South Florida though. Even though all their championships came between '83 (fake one) and '01, they are 4th all time in AP national championships.

Also doesn't help that Florida Atlantic and Florida International set up shop as D1 schools along with UCF elevating their game...all helped to dilude the talent base they had during their hey day
Just don't see them as significant players at all.

Yes. They do.
But the truth is MOST fans of any school are not that die hard and don't REALLY care that much.

The fact that his agent has thrown out his name for other coaching jobs is also a canary in the coalmine.
I do think Miami has a better shot of staying a power than Nebraska. I would rather have the recruiting base than the resource commitment in 2015, Miami could always turn the tap back on. It just looks very unlikely right now.

I disagree about Nebraska. Transitioning from Big 12 to Big Ten is a weird transition, especially in the B1G West- where you have teams like Iowa and Wisconsin being "pounders". Nebraska has the fans, resources, and division schedule to become a power again.
And the Big Ten needs it too, or they need to consider re-re-designing the divisions so that Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State aren't in the same freaking division. That was a terrible idea. At the very least, put Michigan State in the West or the championship is going to keep looking like last year's game. Penn State and Michigan are both going to get better, and fast. Michigan State will likely slide a bit due to this, but Ohio State is going to keep winning. Putting the 3 best historical teams and Michigan State (currently #2) in the same division is a nightmare

Your average fan of any school/team doesn't care that much. Maybe in Bama they do, but not in the rest of the country. Some do, many don't.
