Also doesn't help that Florida Atlantic and Florida International set up shop as D1 schools along with UCF elevating their game...all helped to dilude the talent base they had during their hey day

Florida Atlantic and Florida International aren't diluting anyone's talent base. They're perennial ESPN Bottom 10 schools.

UCF and probably USF have probably done more to dilute things (in terms of keeping some of the Orlando and Tampa talent), but do those schools really recruit the Miami area?

Your average fan of any school/team doesn't care that much. Maybe in Bama they do, but not in the rest of the country. Some do, many don't.

The major teams fans absolutely do, its not just bama.

You must be missing a key word here: Average.

All of that doesn't matter. If they go on another 3-5 NC in 10 year run, the playoff money and air time would off set any issues they have in selling out a stadium. They are like USC. Both set in a hot bed of talent, and one coach can turn them around quickly.

They rarely came close to selling out the Orange Bowl back in their hey day. Almost all their sellouts were from when they played Florida, Notre Dame, FSU, and bowl games. The rest usually topped out in the 40k range w/the occasional spike to 50-60k when a big time team came to town.

Why would that change now?

Nebraska has the fans, resources, and division schedule to become a power again.

You are missing a key part of the equation- talent. Where is Nebraska getting this "national power" talent from?

In the Big 8 they poached places like the south or Cali. Those pipelines are dead as players would rather play for the local team than dustry Nebraska. In the Big 12 they would poach Texas, but that talent pipeline is gone too.

I agree that Nebraska still has the fan support and the resources, but to not put too fine of point on it 80,000 people giving their all in the stands doesn't matter if the 11 players on the field aren't talented enough.

I mean MAYBE they can sneak through that division unscathed and get to the playoffs via a championship game upset or something. But I wouldn't call a Nebraska that gets blown out first round of the playoffs "a power."

If they adapt to the Iowa/Wisconsin style, they can out-recruit both of those schools in the Midwest. There's enough talent to win with the right players. That's really the key to it. Plus, once they have some stability and don't have an insane coach, it'll be much easier to use the Nebraska name to recruit

This is true. I have a co-worker who is a sidewalk Canes fan. If you asked him what conference they are in he couldn't tell you. He couldn't even tell you who played for the NC last year. Canes fans are mostly sidewalker and also a joke. Guess they think that "U" is cool looking.

Cool find.

I wonder what the deciding factor ultimately was against expansion. Looks like they already had 6 of the 9 schools needed to approve.

Interesting that LSU, Bama, Vandy and Tulane were considered the crucial votes.

I'd compare Houston to the likes of Cincinnati. Neither really fit the Power Five conference profile, but have had some success in many sports. It would just be a weird fit for Houston to be in the SEC, or Cincinnati in the Big Ten

Read it. I also like how they approved putting recruiting under the control of the college and not the alumni. Can you imagine if recruiting was still under the control of the alumni or outside groups?

doesnt mean, they dont have any sidewalk fans at all, nor does it mean that they have more alumni than sidewalk fans.

It simply means they dont have the fanbase(sidewalk or alumni)

Miami is one of those schools that is just a good coach away from being a national power again. That's why you add them.

Well they need to upgrade facilities and start cheating again as well. Then yeah, they'd no doubt be relevant if those things happened.

Today it would be a weird fit, but maybe not so much in 1955.

They have quite a few dorms now.

I really dont think they qualify as a commuter school anymore.

As of 2013 apparently only A&M had more beds for students on campus in the state of Texas.
