I don't doubt Saban loves what he does as much as any coach, but if you don't think money drives him, I don't know what to tell you. If money wasn't that important to him, he would still be the coach at Michigan State. Joe Paterno was a coach that wasn't concerned with money. His salary was just over a million a year upon his retirement. Saban has been one of the top 5 paid coaches in football since 2000.

Because there's no way someone with relatively young children and less than 10 years as a head coach might change their priorities after having a stint in the NFL, winning 4 national titles, getting incredibly wealthy, and becoming a grandfather.

I think it's just Texas boosters trying to save face and maintain their enormous egos.

I don't get that argument. I mean, I get the braggadocio bit -- "Hey, we have lots of money!" -- but the other part makes no sense. Why on earth would they make up a claim that demonstrated that they tried to throw all that money at someone and he still told them to go frick themselves? What's the benefit of bragging about how you can't even lure a coach to your program with $100 million? The only conclusion that leads to is that your program has fallen so far that one-tenth of a billion dollars isn't enough to get who you want. It's like bragging that the head cheerleader turned you down for the prom despite you offering to buy her a new Maserati if she'd go. It just makes you seem like you must be really repulsive.

Exactly. Maybe something Bama boosters would brag about but not UTA boosters

I'm guessing you've never had the pleasure of having a conversation with a Texas oil man.

meh - he didn't need the money. he is set there, and has a good thing going at Bama - plus he had nothing to prove by taking the Texas job.

he would have proved that he is all about money and not about his word.

In the wall street article him and his wife pretty much stated that they were going to stay at Bama no matter what. Even referred to the tornado.

If he said that and then bailed then he would have confirmed all that was said about him back in 2007.

$100 million is meaningless to a man of integrity like Saban.

Bama will be on probation soon enuff and he'll retire. The alabama science department will be sure to get a sample of his DNA. They will of course merge it with Bear Bryants. Then in future, when cloning is leagalized...the rammer jammers will be set with coaches till the fire rain starts to fall

Lots of jealousy and hurt feelings in here. I know in 2007 you were all posting that Saban would jump at the next job that came available etc etc. Just admit you were wrong and he loves being at Bama. Its OK to be wrong sometimes.

Now the flame seems to be that Saban isn't as ambitious as we thought and he is stupid for staying at Bama. Whatever it takes to get the jabs in.

Doesn't one actually have to be offered a contract in order to turn it down?

the only people that have said anything like that are being pretty blatantly sarcastic. most people have taken one or two stances for the most part: 1) the story is bullshite 2) saban is fine with his current situation. or both

Really? Even if they though it meant a guranteed NC trophy for the case?

Maybe, the BOR is separated from the program.

There was talk in Austin when all this was going on that much of the compensation (I was hearing even bigger numbers) would be under the table (real estate deals and the like) so that the Horns wouldn't be bad guys nationally for blowing up coaching salaries.

in this business, not really. very rarely is a contract actually offered before both parties have agreed to a deal. i really can't think of many, if any, instances where a coach said that a school offered him a contract but he turned it down

Explain how? Do you really think he will flame out at Bama? He probably won't win 3 more national titles if he stays at Bama 7 more years, but he doesn't have to. You have no basis for this statement other than pure desire to see the man fail. Coaches might out coach him at times and he will lose some games, but until his recruiting starts falling way off the man just has too much talent in his program for it to start sucking.

even if he does fall, his legacy has pretty much already been set. really the only thing he has to achieve at this point is passing bear bryant. he could never have another winning season and still be viewed as one of the greatest coaches in cfb history. unless he's broke and has made horrible investments with his money, i doubt he'll regret much (although I still doubt the validity of the "offer")

I still maintain the belief that Saban and Texas had come to an agreement, but he got pissed off then backed out once it started to leak.

If Texas sources have been able to keep their mouths shut until after the Sugar Bowl, he is at Texas right now

Do you maintain it?
