Why does everyone think Austin is some cultural mecca that no one can turn down? Austin, LA, Miami, Tuscaloosa, Auburn and so on and so forth. There's not one whittle of difference to any of these places when it comes to being a football coach. Every single major coach out there has a second home somewhere else for the off season. When these guys go in at 6-7am and leave at 8pm or later every night and on the road as much as they are, the probably have no clue about the surrounding areas away from campus. I would almost bet anything that location outside of campus means very little to them, if anything.

I don't get that argument. I mean, I get the braggadocio bit -- "Hey, we have lots of money!" -- but the other part makes no sense. Why on earth would they make up a claim that demonstrated that they tried to throw all that money at someone and he still told them to go frick themselves? What's the benefit of bragging about how you can't even lure a coach to your program with $100 million? The only conclusion that leads to is that your program has fallen so far that one-tenth of a billion dollars isn't enough to get who you want. It's like bragging that the head cheerleader turned you down for the prom despite you offering to buy her a new Maserati if she'd go. It just makes you seem like you must be really repulsive.
Exactly! Why boast about offering un-Godly amounts of money to Saban and still pissed on it to stay at Alabama? If Austin is such a great place to live, scads of $$$ to be made, talent coming out the arse, facilities second to none, etc, etc. Then why the hell wouldn't Saban back the truck up to the oil rig and start pumping immediately?

Makes Texas look even more repulsive that you can't get a guy to coach there even if you offer him any amount of money.

agree with that from a coach's standpoint, but to answer your question....their wives, who, unfortunately, generally can be a very demanding and persuasive bunch

You're posts ahve been great, throughout this thread, just FYI. Lots of reading pleasure.

I think the deal (as an Aggie) was probably pretty close to legit. tu donors could offer saban interest in well royalties/land etc. That would have made this an enormous deal to walk away from.

Do I think Saban ever really leaned to going to tu? No. The problems(scandals) going on at that program, matched with the pressures of the fan base to win instantly, matched with an overall shitty conference, all rounded up with the LHN issues, and its easy to see why Saban would be turned off.

DO I think Saban could have done well at tu? Yeah, they are an established program that is in the gutter, but pretty easily can be rebuilt... by the right coach.

That brings me to the fact that Saban would have to play and coach against spread teams (obviously not his brand of ball) just to get tu back to even footing in the shite 12 conference (easily behind OU and Baylor, if not even OSU).

With A&M drawing great interest from all the states top talent, Saban would have hurt the recruiting efforts of A&M, but the conference they play in is still crap compared to the SEC.

To recap; Saban took these behind the scenes offers, got a little more out of Bama, and remained happy.

One thing everyone else is forgetting, Saban would have taken most of his staff, likely, and thats a pretty expensive staff, if memory serves me right. And tu can't just throw 100million at Saban and scraps to the staff. Most likely, it would have been viewed as a bad procedure to up a HC's pay that much, and then spend that much on staff as well.

One more note, tu thinks they are the program they were in the late 60's, every day. That's part of the issue with their program. So, lets say tu really does offer saban this deal, why did they not offer some of these guys way up on there list an even smaller deal that most would jump at, and instead settle on Charlie?

Sips HC list
1. Saban
2. Harbaughs (they wanted either one)
3. Gruden
4. Shaw
5. Chip Kelly
6. Urban Meyer
7. Briles/Muschamp/Peterson
8. Chollie

And the reason this number is being reported so high, if not real, is because the tu boosters need to keep appearance up that they did everything the could to "get their man".

They wanna fit in with aTm. All the joys of a black coach with no butt sex stigma.

Doesn't sound terrible.

Charlie should be more pissed that one of UT's dumbarse booster trashed him publically the day he was hired. I'm sure that $5mm/yr salary would ease my feelings at the end of the day.

Also, the biggest obstacle to clear for the longhorns and Saban, was definitely MACK BROWN.

Mack has a bigger ego than any man in the country. He couldnt simply allow the greatest coach since the Bear to come in to the program he resurrected, and steal the spotlight, and theoretically drag it out of the ditch its in.

Mack wants his statue, and he doesn't want anyone elses looking over his shoulder, or worse, blocking his view.

Im bashing it because it is obviously below the SEC, which we are a part of.

Alonzo, if A&M had been in the Big 12 the last two years, we probably have at least 1 NC appearance, and I have realized that.

Do you think im out of line thinking that? I have no doubt A&M can and will beat any team they face from here on out from the shite 12 conference.

Before the move to the SEC? I would say in any given year we have a 10% chance to beat OU, and a 35% chance to beat tu.

Since the move? I would call us a favorite anyday.

Is Alonzo that bad? I thought he was one of the better tiger posters.

He is homer as hell, but sometimes comes around to the normal side of an argument.
