He absolutely did. He out-coached it by stealing a possession back.

It's hilarious how much everyone wants to hang their hats on a TD with :12 seconds left that made this less than a two possession win and Clemson scoring 33. Playing prevent D means you're more likely to let the other team score, but not as fast. He did what he had to do to win you dinguses.

Bama's defense held Clemson to a pivotal 3 and out before the on-side kick. Not to mention Bama's defense produced the only turnover of the game. A turnover that led to points.

Was it the "spread" that gave Bama problems, or an elite QB playing at an elite level?

Most defenses are not going to look good if the talent is comparable but the QB is playing out of his mind.

Clemson actually had to play a formidable foe during the first playoff game and they got dinged up. Bama had to play a team that most SEC teams would beat including Auburn. REC wins again.

To say Bama's defense wasn't a factor in that victory is damn stupid!

I agree. It wasn't a classic Bama defensive performance, but they did manage to slow Watson down just enough. We had an int and forced multiple punts. The Clemson offense would have scored 70 against 90% of the defenses in the country with their performance last night.

All 3 phases contributed to that win last night!

This, the spread is not enough to beat Alabama. You must have an elite QB to have a chance against Alabama.

it's hilarious you're trying to hang your hat on some masterful performance against the spread offense. saban made an extremely ballsy call and it paid off, nothing more. he didn't figure out anything. he took a huge gamble and was fortunate enough to have it work. it's like you didn't evben watch the game. alabama's defense was completely gassed the entire second half. watson wore them out. alabama was basically ole miss to clemson last night whether you choose to admit it or not

Alabama's D stopped Clemson when it mattered most.

Interception led to the TD that tied the game.

Stopping Clemson to a field goal in the 4th that on the ensuing kickoff gets returned for a TD, making it back to a two possession game instead of a one possession

Forcing a 3 and out on the drive that set up the game tying field goal that set up the onside kick.

And finally, most importantly, not trying to blitz and pull all their players up but playing back to force Clemson into multiple throws that ate up the clock and won them the fricking game.

Jesus, yes they had issues, but they also made the most critical plays of the game. It's like you didn't watch the game.

Watson embarrassed everyone all year long. Bama was the only team that beat him though.

I don't think Bama conquered anyone last night, but it just solidifies the point that Elite QB's are elite for a reason. Watson made some throws last night that no defense is gonna stop.

He is an Elite QB for sure, the best in the country and didn't get it done which was my point.

Both. Bama didn't rush their ends nearly as aggressively as they have all season for fear of Watson escaping the pocket. They'd rush 3 yards upfield and stop. The Clemson OL did a really good job not letting the interior guys collapse the pocket. So the fear of the "spread" element of the running QB gave Watson time to drop dimes on the secondary.

I watched Deshaun Watson put up 500 yards of offense by himself and now am watching you try to say how that was a good performance on Alabama's part. Special teams won the game, not stopping the spread.

500 yards. No, just no.

We're fortunate to get the win. I get it--special teams are part of the game and they came up big. And sometimes you find a way to win.

But people watching that game are taking notes.
