The defense had absolutely no answer for Clemson.
Sure they did. They held them to a few 3 and outs, and if I recall right Clemson punted 6 or 7 times. Defense stopped them plenty.
The kryptonite to Saban's defense is a QB throwing dimes like Watson was last night, especially one that can also run. Still, Saban figured out a few years ago to beat these spread teams he has to keep pace on offense. We did that last night, as ugly as it was at times.

We now just outscore you.
Yep. After the OU Sugar Bowl Saban knew he had to change. People made fun of the Kiffin hire but he is why Saban is where he is 2 years later. It's the same reason why LSU will never get over the 10 win hump. We can't get into shootouts like Bama did last night.

It was actually after the 2012 A&M game.

This is true. Saban realized that he wasn't going to be able to win big games 17-14 anymore. Bringing in Kiffin to create a more explosive offense has been his best answer to the spread. Defensively we were running around like headless chickens too often.

I wouldnt go that far. Had it not been for Bama playing excellent STs and Clemsons defense having major blown coverages Clemson probably wins that game.

While most on the rant will try and get moral victories about Alabama letting Clemson score 40, the reality is Saban did conquer the spread last night. And it had to do with one thing: the pulse of the game.
Saban knew exactly when to call that onside kick. He felt the pulse of the game, knew it was an option, and had his players execute.
He made a quick, on the fly decision after he realized his defensive scheme just wasn't going to cut it against Clemson. He had to change the pace of the game, and he did.
So in one essence, he did conquer the spread. But the more accurate assessment would be that he out-coached the spread.
The scary part? He's only going to get better at it. Because he's Nick fricking Saban.

Alabama beat the best spread team in the nation with the best QB in the country last night. I think it is fair to say that Saban has figured it out.
NO. Watson and the Tigers put up 40 points and over 500 yards on Saban.
You guys won because of 2 amazing special teams plays and because Kiffin found a mismatch in OJ Howard.
Your defense didn't figure out anything last night.

Dude, we won because Saban knew his defense was getting raped and so he decided we could only win by other means.
Great coaching.
Regardless, Watson and their recievers were embarrassing our defense.

He conquered the spread by scoring a lot more fricking points.

He won the game, aided by a really gutsy ST call. But I would not say he conquered the spread.

It took an outside kick and a KO return for a TD for Bama to win last night. The D gave up 40 points. While Saban is the GOAT, he has not conquered the spread.

Read my whole post. He conquered it in a sense, but the most accurate description is that he out-coached the spread last night.

But Clemson gave Alabama it's best shot, with a Heisman-caliber QB, and we won the game
sure you won the game but not due to your ability to stop Watson and the Clemson offense. An onside kick and a kickoff for a TD won the game for y'all, not figuring out the spread.

He shut out TAMU last year and they run the spread. So why does that game not count as conquering the spread? In other words, either it is the offense or it is the team. Its the team. Clemson was #1 for a reason

To say Bama's defense wasn't a factor in that victory is damn stupid!

he didn't out coach the spread, he outcoached dabo sweeny.

maybe because A&M was awful last year?

why do you think Saban chose to kick an onside kick? His defense had no answer for Watson so he had to do something to flip the game
