US news: Vandy, then UF, then aTm, then UGA then everyone else. Mizzou isnt in the top 100, I don't think..

Auburn has a higher acceptance rate and higher ACT scores, so you can not use the same arguement
Auburn has to have a higher admittance rate than Alabama (70% vs 44%) because Auburn enrolls a much lower percentage of those admitted than Bama (42% vs 87%). If you know that less than half of the students admitted will actually enroll, then you'd damn well better admit a lot of them.
quote:
And their nationally recruiting of scholastic standouts does not hold water either, Auburn had more NMS last year than bama.
Actually, Alabama and Auburn both claim to have been ranked 2nd nationally in number of NMS in 2011 with 181 each
quote:
The numbers fudging is a factor of parents and students looking at these guides to select their future schools.
Alleged numbers fudging. Yet to see any evidence other than what you claim you were told. Just like sammy claimed that the average freshman ACT score at Alabama was 22 and TiM claimed that Alabama hid the average freshmen ACT scores.
Again, the dramatic increase in applicants has allowed Alabama to be more selective which has corresponded to an increase in average ACT score.
I do find it interesting that 2 different Auburn fans report having "heard" that Alabama's increase in enrollment has led to watered down academic qualifications of the student body. This despite actual reports that Alabama has increased minimum acceptance qualifications, average freshman GPA, average freshman ACT scores, and number of NMS. So forgive me if, absent any actual evidence, I continue to be skeptical of what you heard.

You have Georgia and TAMU reversed in your ranking. US News has UGA ahead of the Aggies.

I don't want to throw cold water on all the fun but unless you come from the Ivy League, Cambridge/Oxford or a few select schools like MIT or Stanford, no one really gives a frick where you went to school. That's right Gators and Aggies, no Oooo's and Ahhh's if you tell someone you graduated from Texas f'ing A&M.
Jeez, stupid thread.

This is the correct response when your school ranks low academically and you have nothing meaningful to add.

The chasm between these two schools has always been notoriously notable. Has Alabama benefitted from Atlanta ´s diaspora of the 90´s and early 2000´s?
I won´t explain the diaspora, but ´he who hath ears, let him hear´.
Also, Mizzou, I thought you´d be higher than Bammer.
Damn.

Flawed rankings are flawed.
MSU and OM are governed by the Ayers Case(look it up) in MS -- basically locking our in-state admission standards to be identical to all the HBCU in MS. This is a double-edged sword for us.
Tons of students get into MSU and OM that have no business being there, which kills our rankings. These students then promptly drop out, which kills our rankings again.
IF you made this chart Graduate Income vs Per-Capita income of those living nearby, this thing would tell an ENTIRELY different story -- and State/OM would look like much more attractive destinations.

This is also an appropriate response when you're an Ivy League grad and employee.
But really, when it comes down to it, I'm not looking at a single PhD program at an SEC school besides Vandy. Social sciences aren't dominated by the SEC at all.

There are a decent amount of foreigners but nothing like UF I believe. Mainly a lot of Asians. Tuscaloosa is the sister city to a city in Japan and I know we get a lot of students from that particular area of Japan.
I have noticed that the Chinaman population in T-Town seems to be booming here of late.

This. You cannot find a job where a hiring decision will be made based upon an A&M degree versus another school in the SEC. Same for Florida.

quote:I work for a defense contractor here in Denver. We do lots of engineering sh1t and hire a lot of young college graduates (> 3.2 GPA in field of study required). There are a few hundred people that work in my division. I can tell you that if the hiring managers were to receive a resume from anything Alabama, they would automatically throw it in the trash. We do have one Auburn grad working here... but he was only interviewed because they didn't realize Auburn was in Alabama (plus the guy was originally from Canada).

From the SEC, we have a few UF grads, a few aTm'ers, and the one Auburn guy. No other SEC people. Graduates from SEC schools other than UF and aTm don't get a lot of consideration, because there is a stigma attached to being from the Deep South. Almost everyone who works here is from CU Boulder or Big Ten schools. We also have a few Ivy Leaguers, primarily from Cornell. Most of my co-workers view the SEC as considerably inferior from an academic standpoint.
Edit: Also one Mizzou guy.

I don't get why anybody would care about this. Vandy is clearly #1 and after that... well if you're #2 vs. #3, does anybody really care? Should they? And I'm not even sure about #1: How many smart engineers does Vandy produce, for example? I've never met one, and I think I would have if they existed.
Likewise Georgia is clearly a good school, but I know exactly 0 engineer graduates from Georgia. But I know plenty of very smart, very sharp engineers from LSU, which ranks low on any list I've seen. So what does any list mean? To me it is apples and USB thumb drives.
