You can't rank Oxford first solely because of the draconian drinking laws

Forbes Magazine Top 10 Best Small Cities for Jobs (Auburn top 10 nationally, no other SEC teams ranked).
LINK /

Southern Living (We are in the South), Best College Towns...UGA, Auburn, Arkie, UT, Ole Miss, Florida..A population under 200,000 (thus excluding favorites like Austin) so that the school has an incredibly strong impact on the town.
A lively local scene with good, affordable restaurants, independent boutiques, and support of the arts.
A dedicated and active alumni base.
A healthy dose of Southern charm.
LINK

Al.com Article (10 best places to live in Alabama), Auburn #1(print the shirts).Does the town have good public schools? We measured schools’ academic performance with ratings from GreatSchools. This non-profit compares a given school’s standardized test scores to the state average to obtain a rating on a 1 to 10 scale (10 representing the highest score). Higher ratings led to a higher overall score.
Can you afford to live there? We looked at both median home values in each town and ongoing monthly home costs, including mortgage payments, real estate taxes, insurance costs, utilities, fuel and other bills. Lower costs led to a higher overall score.
Is the town growing and prospering? We assessed a town’s economy by looking at average household income and income growth over the last decade. Higher income and greater growth led to a higher overall score.

I could find other references (this was a 5 minute check)

The Bama Message Board Poster, Auburn is trailer parks, cows, etc. is not true... Has Tuscaloosa every been ranked by an outside organization as a nice place to live or go to school?

Many Bama fans that visit Auburn are surprised how nice it is. Had many tell me that. Full disclosure, I actually Like Tuscaloosa, had a lot of fun there when I visited when I was in Auburn.

Been to EVERY Campus, Like them all in different ways. Hate how UGA trashes their campus, like the Grove, Tailgating at LSU, the River @ UT. Gainsville is one of my least favorites...MSU is well MSU...

Maybe there's nothing "right across from the stadium," but there are plenty of SEC towns with downtown areas (Athens) or "strips" (Tuscaloosa) with areas like that within a five minute walk from the stadium or right across from tailgate areas.

i actually didnt like athens that much... just imo but maybe that was because i lived there as an AU fan...

i still would rank it higher than Auburn... we need to do some work. Auburn and Opelika need to just merge already

I'm just saying it's not this incredibly unique thing you've put so much effort into saying it is

I'll say it again...there will be nothing remotely like it in the SEC. Restaurants, shops, and bars right across from the stadium. Which is a good thing, as it allows fans to have a good time while the traffic dies down after games.

I can't wait. If we want people to pack into Tiger Stadium every week, the city and school need to get together and treat it more like a professional sporting event.

If there is nothing else like it...and there isn't...then it is unique. And it's not like LSU didn't already have "strips" within walking distance. This just means more options. Without the five minute walk.

I put it more on the city. LSU does everything it can to get people off the campus in an orderly and timely fashion. All that goes to waste because the BRPD half-arses it's part of the deal.

Places I have been to. Not including Nashville.

1. Athens - lame if you cant admit this.

2. Tuscaloosa - I just know that town so well. And it has improved immensly over the past few years. Amphitheatre in downtown is a huge plus. Local brewerys are opening. Lake Tuscaloosa/Lake Nichol. Only getting better. Nortport has alot of charm. Has good industry outside the university. It does have a ghetto side, any city its size in the south has that. That Ghetto is held in a part of the city that unfortunately you have to drive through before you get to the nicer parts. I think this gives alot of the bad taste to outsiders. But as you learn all the secrets to the city you begin to see the brighter side of things. as more money gets pumped into there things wil continue to improve. I also think that having most of our football games in Birmingham for upwards of 50 years impeded the growth of the Tuscaloosa. Now that all the games are there with 100k+ fans/35k+ students, development will continue to grow.

3. Columbia - not much to say other than I like the river going through downtown. pretty downtown area/campus. Of all the SEC towns, Columbia is the most livable to me...

4. Auburn - dated a girl from Opelika so I know the area decently. Auburn is more than it seems when you drive in. more than the "one stoplight" attitude alot of bama fans give it. Good industry in the area. Downtown Opelika reminds me of Northport, but with a train running through it. THe campus is really pretty although I was always thrown off by the fact that it does not seem to have a "Quad/Grove" area that is common.

4. Oxford - Charming town. not much there outside the university. Good people. I actually think THe drinking laws help the charm of the oxford. Dont have drunks galavanting around at all hours of the night.

5. Baton Rouge - big city but i like the setting on the Mississippi. pretty campus. only geting better. has the same ghetto issues that Tuscaloosa has(more of it). Great restaurants and food.

6. Knoxville - similar to BR but in the mountains. Great outdoors. their "strip" needs improving(was last there in 2010). Campus is kind of a cluster.

7. College Station - Great school. But the campus and town has a corporate park feel to it as you arrive. Northgate is good. Texans know how to build/run a good bar/nightlife. I have heard good things about Bryan but never been. It jsut has an outpost feel to everything. What they are doing to their football stadium is ridiculous - will be the best in the conference. Im already good to admit that.

8. Starkville - have not been in years. reminds me of college station. the recent pictures that I have seen actually look like the place is improving alot. need to make a visit. im liking the new stadium addition.

Yes I've been to most of them. I go to school at ole miss. I grew up an hour from Gainesville, been to Br once, T-town twice. Knoxville once ( my brothers gf lives there). I've been to Athens once, Nashville twice, Starkville, USC, and auburn one time for all weekend road trips. I haven't been to Fayetteville , or Lexington. As from what I hear, Fayetteville is nice.
Again.. Haha this list is just my opinion based off experience. Everyone has a different experience, so there is no wrong or right.

Exactly. Nice, but rather bland campus architecture with the brick buildings and red roofs.
