So sorry to hear this. Pinkel seems like a good guy. Prayers to him and his family.

I wonder what type Lymphoma he was diagnosed with. There are around 60 sub types of NH Lymphoma. Some far more aggressive than others. I have had two bouts with Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma since 2011. It is one of the most aggressive but also one that has a successful rate of being put into remission if you have historically had a strong immune system and not up in age.

My first bout was stage IV when treatments started but I still was given a 80% survival rate prognosis. But I was still kind of uneasy because the actor who played Spartacus in the series by that name had died from the same sub type within 6 months of diagnosis. And he looked to be the epitome of physical health.

Nevertheless, my 5 month treatment plan weakened me pretty good and I lost all my hair, eyebrows and nails. Pinkel does not look to have undergone the same type treatment regimen I did. Without the hair loss and weight loss I am led to believe he had a subtype that was less aggressive. CLL is a small follicular type that with treatment allows many to live 20+ years with the disease. But it is incurable whereas my more aggressive type is curable.

Mine relapsed after 4 months with a vengeance and my survival rate prognosis was reduced to 35%. The 'go for broke' treatment schedule which included intense chemo, tumor radiation, Total Body Irradiation and a Stem cell transplant was brutal. But I am almost 3 years cancer clear today.

Whichever type he has, I cannot blame him for wanting to focus on the important things in life like family. The timing of all this crap at Mizz likely made his decision much easier. Hope he does as well as I did in battling this disease.

I feel bad for him. I wish him a good recovery, while your team loses every game for the next two decades as they continue to be a bunch of lying pussies. But I really hope Pinkel recovers fully from this.

That's awful. He has been a very solid coach.

Damn. I feel bad for Mizzou.

Feel bad for Pinkel and his family and friends.

Mizzou as a whole can quite frankly go frick themselves.

Pinkel looked defeated all season, I'm not surprised by this news. You could just see it on the sideline, he doesn't have the fire anymore.

Be an interesting offseason.

Thanks for your informative post. And yes, Pinkel is reported to have the incurable form. I don't blame him for retiring now to enjoy his remaining years.

I hope for your continued good health as well.

Yeah I don't blame him at all for retiring. Life is too short to have to deal with this disease the same time putting up with the shite storm going on. With the money he has made, family and friends to support him, and enjoy life outside the spotlight, he made the right decision for himself.

I wish he would of thought this through as far as backing the players, maybe provided himself more time to check out everything that was going on around him, but the boycotting players wasn't going to allow that. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. For everything he has done for Mizzou, it's a shame he has to retire under the current situation.

In the end though, nothing but love for Gary. Great coach, and most important, great human being. Thanks for the years and memories.

Meh. We've already outclassed Ole Miss in just four years, so I'm sure we'll hire an excellent replacement.

No. He obviously can't. He's apparently that miserable a human being. Just a tool, and an anonymous message board badass.

Some of the comments and rhetoric are just classless.

Did I miss something? What did he do? Because he supported his players?
