Why did they bowl in the end facing the river first? Seems aesthetically stupid.

Let me see if I can find a decent (less than or equal to) 1940 picture, then.

Old as shite; no stands:

1959:

Another good current one:

Nice cyde! I really like that first image. Do you know what year it is?

I think circa 1940.

Is this during construction that was stopped for the season, or did they really build the upper deck like that then add on years later?

So the whole legend of Tenn "redrawing the seat lines to up the capacity" is just a myth? Interesting. Why even make up such a thing?

It's not entirely a myth since we did add more seats for a while but there really wasn't enough change in terms of seat width to be noticeable. The whole thing was just fuel for the SEC rival/opponent mill. More exaggeration than reality and doesn't even make sense today. But that's football - nothing wrong with fans giving one another a hard time.

All jokes aside, this is an amazing image, from an aesthetic standpoint. It's almost haunting-looking.

So it was in the 1980s that Kyle began to evolve into a tackle box.

Yup:

That is from 1980 when we built the final third decks.

One funny thing I found was a picture from the 1950s of a potential future Kyle Field:

We just had too many fans (E. TN is just flat out obsessional). Demand has always been through the roof. I don't mind bowling it end as you can see in the 1948 pic the view is still there. But we needed to grow. Also, Coach Neyland designed our stadium in phases (he was an engineer w/the Army Corps of Engineers - even oversaw a lot of construction at what would become a TVA lake) and lived to see many of them through. It had been a plan to reach a 100k from the start.

Ahh good to know. Some it has to be that THE picture that represents Tenn fans is of a fat couple.

Shake off the haters, Neyland is an impressive stadium and the SEC's first 100,000 capacity venue

'Bama fans are contractually obligated to bash Neyland. It's part of the whole rivalry thing.

Yup. Just like we will always be this guy plowing into a hotdog:

Which I love by the way as it makes us seem diverse.

Edit: Her gut is so big that pic always amazes me. Also how dated their clothes and style was. It is 1982 in what I assume was like 1999.

neyland is pretty much a dump... but for being so large, there really ins't a bad seat in the place.
