There are too many 4 year universities in Louisiana, and only a few of them have 1 or 2 truly great degree programs. UL-L and Southeastern have great nursing and criminal justice programs, ULM has a great pharmaceutical program, Tech is a very good engineering school, but most of the rest of the colleges in the state only exist because politicians here seem to think there should be another college every 3 or 4 parishes.

So according to the Forbes rankings:

Only South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas A&M are the SEC schools that are not rated one of the three best in their respective states.

South Carolina lists Wofford, Furman, and Clemson ahead of USC.
Tennessee lists Vandy, Rhodes, Sewanee and Fisk (black Harvard) ahead of UT-Knoxville
Texas lists Rice, Texas and SMU ahead of A&M

SEC schools national ranking:

37 Vanderbilt
74 Florida
90 Georgia
122 Texas A&M
179 LSU
190 South Carolina
205 Alabama
208 Missouri
209 Arkansas
225 Auburn
257 Kentucky
278 Ole Miss
279 Mississippi State
282 Tennessee

EL OH EL at Tennessee.

And just for fun, UCF is 405th and USF is 446th. Trading those two for State and Ole Miss would definitely be a drop off academically.

Yeah we have the largest % of out of state students in the SEC, excluding Vandy

What in the hell does that prove ? There are rednecks in other states also. My guess is Jacksonville St has the same % of out of state students as Bama. Are you trying to compare them to Vandy with that logic.

UGA is no where close to Emory.

Yep and neither is GT or any other school in the state. Emory is the best school in GA and it isn't remotely close.

Look at the ratings criteria for Forbes rankings.

Student Satisfaction (22.5%)
Post-Graduate Success (37.5%)
Student Debt (17.5%)
Graduation Rate (11.25%)
Nationally Competitive Awards (11.25%)

May be a little high on student satisfaction and low on graduation rate and nationally competitive awards, but its a better methodology than US News uses.

Forbes rankings are so subjective. I bet Furman offers maybe a quarter as many degree programs as USC, and they're probably all liberal arts.

Not technically. You can get a leadership scholarship based on your leadership abilities on the football field, but the school has to award as much leadership scholarship to the general student body.

D3 school with 2000 students and 400 athletes (20%)

200 of the athletes are dumb and can't get an academic scholarship, so they are given $10k leadership scholarships at $2 million

The school has to give $2 million in leadership scholarships to at least 160 non-athletes. Academic scholarships aren't affected.

Just jerking your chain. A wise Carolina prof told me one time that the "whose best" for the most part is pure junk. He said the average college student probably should be in smaller college, like Presbyterian or Wofford, where he or she would be challenged more, mainly because the profs have more time.

While the really best and brightest would be better off in one of the leading universities, state or private.

I think the regional system offered by Carolina is one of the best things ever to happen to the state.

We got no problem.

Agreed.

Of course they do. Ohio State offers 500 majors. Are they better than Harvard they offers 50?

Emory 215 ... too concentrated on the medical sciences.

Both their business school (Goizueta) and their law school are ranked in the top 20 in the country.

Matter of degrees, I know someone going for her marine biology masters, I would say she's better off at UCLA than Mich, Tenn or kansas St.
Would non-coastal states even have those types of programs?
