So you think schools like Eastern Michigan and San Jose State try to buy 5 star recruits with their boosters?
In short yes. They don't have the financial backing and resources of the big-time programs but it still goes on.

not 5 stars, but benefits happen at smaller schools. Benefits, including cash, happen for non revenue sports as well, like cross country

Of course it goes on. A lot of people know about it too. Only morons believe otherwise.
If you cry about a rival school cheating you are a gigantic pussy.

It's not. And see my previous post, I wish we DID have a badass set up like this. But there is just no way at all that with as limp wristed we run our football program from the top down AD to the coaches, that this is at UGA. This specific instance I mean. Dude is talking about meeting the coach and "taking care of things" for players. I'm pretty sure Richt wouldn't be like "oh ok that's cool".
I'm gonna disagree with you on this. This specific story likely isn't UGA, just based on odds, but we very likely have a similar system in place. We couldn't recruit the players we do otherwise.
You think recruiting JHC away from FSU and UF out of Valdosta was totally clean? Fat chance

Yeah you can get a little bit of flavor from each SEC school.

"Hide" the money trail? Sure, that's possible.
But when a kid from the ghetto with an unemployed mother and 5 siblings who can barely afford to have 2 pairs of pants starts driving a 2014 Charger...you can't hide that.

This isn't a specific story. In the third paragraph he says he talked to a bunch of different boosters all over the south during a two month period. This is several interviews put together.

Go to any SEC campus and sit outside the practice field and look what each of them drive in with. It's blatantly obvious and no one does a thing about it.

Youngstown State, a D II school, was put on probation for players getting cars and money. They don't have to be 5*'s and they don't have to be D I programs to have boosters wanting to field a good team. The Military Academies are the only schools who don't buy players.

Wrong, according to the bag man
quote:
The most common non-cash gifts to recruits are cars. In every major city inside the Southeastern Conference's footprint is a tangle of auto dealerships with varying ties to particular schools.
"There are jokes about kids getting cars, but that's actually pretty easy. We all have dealerships all over. You practically have to nowadays, anyway, just for the coaches. Think about it. Most schools, all the football, basketball, and baseball coaches and their wives are getting some kind of vehicle for free as part of their contract. Then they're turning them in every three years or so. That's a fleet right there. You need a lot of guys with dealerships, and you need them in different towns. Then getting a clean title on a member of the family is pretty easy."
Whatever the minimum of necessary paperwork to absolve a player of improper benefits received is, it's not a problem. A title for a moderately priced SUV can be created in a relative's name, as can a receipt of sale for a reasonable price.
"Hey, how'd he get that ride? His uncle bought it. How did his uncle buy it? Paid cash. Paid cash, how'd he do that? shite, we don't know, but here's the receipt where he paid cash, and now y'all ain't got shite. Go tell the NCAA you think we're cheating because this kid's uncle bought him a used Tahoe in cash, you racist."

Here's another big time truth from the article
quote:
College majors like Exercise Science and General Education have long been assailed by critics as crip-course degrees, but shadow boosters see them as a vital way to perpetuate the cycle. If a player finishes out his eligibility and has no feasible future in the pros, he might return home and become a nearby high school coach. It doesn't matter if it's junior high or seven-on-seven camps; each means a new brand ambassador for the program.
"You win the gym teachers, and you can go a long way. That's why all those basket-weaving degrees are so important, because we need 'em on both ends. You need 'em to keep the kids qualified, and you need 'em to produce guys who can go back and coach and teach and help us."

It amazed me how during the 2010 season, every fanbase on the rant was on their moral high horse about Auburn and paying players*. It has been going on for years and years, and at every school.
*allegedly

Meh, living in the state of Alabama this has bit us on the arse the past couple of years since they've all been in Saban's pocket so I didn't find this part to amusing Hopefuly Gus and his high school coaching background will begin to payoff for us in this area.

If there was a way to clean up the situation no one would like the way the their teams turn out. Welcome to mediocrity. I give you Army/Navy as examples. A fun game to watch but not all season long.

Interesting read. Has me thinking about all the new ESTL recruits Mizzou is signing. And how about that kid from KC?
