I read an article a long time ago that Saban was fired once as assitant coach. I think they did another article on it on al.com

Actually Jackie Sherrill was even more successful than RC in truth. He just got the probation stink on him and Charles Allen Wright was determined to make A&M fire him or else give us the Death Penalty because he made a habit of humiliating Texas every Thanksgiving. RC had his best success while still in the glow of Sherrill's players and slowly faded.

Mack Brown has to be up there as would Darrell Royal, that is unless you really think he really wanted to retire at 52 after winning 3 NC's.

Bear was never fired as an assistant coach or a head coach. Funny thing is, when he was an assistant at Vanderbilt his team actually beat Alabama 7-0

If that's the case, I'd say Bear Bryant.

Bryant died less than a year after retiring. Is that better than getting fired?

Mark Richt
Phil Fulmer
Mack Brown (he was forced out)

A case could be made for Frank Solich and Tubberville.

He was about to be fired from Miami. Bama saved him that embarrassment.

Crazy year when Briles is run off late in the spring and Miles in early season. And millions being paid out so they'll leave.

No he wasn't. They were greatly improved in year one. Had major injury issues in year 2. Why do you think they were so pissed when he left?
