Lloyd Carr was going to be fired so he decided to step down on his own. This following the 2007 season which is memorable for the loss to 2x reigning FCS champion App State.

Mike Leach got caught up with a penny pincher in the Athletic department at Texas Tech. That and he ran a foul of Craig James who was trying to run for US Senate at the time.

Solich got hosed at Nebraska and they have not been the same since. The guy averaged at least 9 wins a year.

Mangino got canned because he hurt somebody's feelings - Kansas has not had a winning season since

I always thought Bill Curry got screwed at Alabama

Rick Neuheisel got screwed as well for basically playing an office pool

Not counting people like Woody Hayes and Jim Tressel who were fired for reasons unrelated to on field play,
Hayes punched the Clemson linebacker right in front of the bench - ON THE FIELD!

Actually Jackie Sherrill was even more successful than RC in truth. He just got the probation stink on him and Charles Allen Wright was determined to make A&M fire him or else give us the Death Penalty because he made a habit of humiliating Texas every Thanksgiving. RC had his best success while still in the glow of Sherrill's players and slowly faded.

This. Jackie Sherrill took a moribund program and had it kicking all kinds of arse. Gobbling up all the 'cruits. Humiliating its rival. Jacking its fanbase up to Benzedrine levels of excitement. He built the foundation and the house that RC inhabited for a decade. RC just sorta took care of it - he mowed the lawn and stuff - but eventually the AC & water heater went out and the roof started leaking.

Relative to his program, this is a pretty darn good answer.

Mike Leach made Texas-freakin-irrelevant-Tech a national name, broke every total offense and passing record, and won 11 games. At Tech! They were never as good or well known before, haven't been since, and probably won't ever be again.

Jimmy Johnson from the Dallas Cowboys

Best answer, if you count NFL.

Fired solely because the owner had a petty personal beef with him.

Harvey Williams says, "Haaaaaaaaaaay!"

Sherrill was 0-3 against LSU while at A&M.

Well he wasn't really a successful coach at the time he was fired. Not was he going to be a good coach again.

Les isn't really a successful coach anymore either and won't be a good coach again

He was about to be fired from Miami. Bama saved him that embarrassment.

You may be right. I can't say. I will say this, Dolphins organization sure did cry about it a lot after he left. If they had allowed him to have a young Drew Brees as his qb, then he might have never come to Bama. I sure am happy about the way things turned out.

It's total speculation to say he would have been fired at Miami, but it is possible.

That said, the bitching was obviously the product of the perceived audacity/disrespect in leaving a storied NFL team for college, not any real love for Saban.

Pretty sure he was fired for non-accomplishment related issues.

FYI, the correct answer to this entire thread is Phil Fulmer.

Made a pact with the Devil, and when it ran out got strung up and noosed by the UT faithful.
