That said, the bitching was obviously the product of the perceived audacity/disrespect in leaving a storied NFL team for college, not any real love for Saban

probably, Saban might have decided on Alabama as a final screw you to Don Shula. (I took your boy's job!)

Pretty sure he was fired for non-accomplishment related issues.

He had some anger issues for sure

Seriously cannot believe that Mark Mangino has not had another head coaching gig. He took KANSAS to the Orange Bowl and won!!

most coaches are smarter than Les miles and they retire so they aren't forced to be fired.

He wouldn't have gotten that $12.9 million if he retired last year. And you call that smart?

I never thought of it that way. That was actually pretty brilliant. I mean, it kind of hit a cash strapped school for $ (unless it's booster paid), but not a bad plan otherwise.

Agreed. Most coaches would retire and forfeit an eight figure buyout.

Jay Novak from Northern Illinois has to be up there.

And Lou Holtz was fired from Arkansas.

Didn't he leave them with some NCAA trouble?

The name got ND out of any real trouble though.

He was fired because he was an idiot.
He was campaigning for some politician. Using his position to do so. Basically. That's just a dumb thing to do. Football coaches, especially ones employed by the state, need to stay the hell out of politics.

Plus, he was an a-hole. Damn good football coach though.

Yeah but its kind of funny he got Minnesota, Arky, USC, and ND in NCAA trouble...

He likes to get on his high horse on TV, but he was a pretty dirty coach when it came to playing the game.

Pretty much this. Everywhere he left, the school went on probation.

ETA: But we were in the SWC, I don't want to use the excuse everyone was doing it, we just got caught, and learned our lesson

If that's the case, I'd say Bear Bryant.

Bryant's health was really bad, he hung up the whistle voluntarily.
