The 1978 game was a matchup between the consensus #1 and #2. It was a game that the BCS would set up if it existed then. It doesnt get any more legit than that. USC lost to a weak team. Their only bragging rights are that they beat the National Champion and finished first losers.

In 1973 #1 Alabama gets matched up with #2 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Both teams are undefeated and untied going in to the game, so we will get to see a true national champion determined on the field. The game lives up to the hype as Notre Dame edges the Tide 24-23 and everyone believes that Notre Dame is the national champions since they won the game. Having lost the game to the Irish doesn't stop Alabama from claiming they are national champions. A flag is hung.
If they actually claim this, that's just as bad, if not worse, as us claiming the 2003 West Title and hanging a banner.

Yep, and MSU finished undefeated, with one tie if I'm not mistaken. And we beat undefeated Georgetown in the Orange Bowl. We could claim 1941 but don't.

Some of you just don't get it... Alabama doesn't "claim" anything. They count what the polls "proclaimed" and before the polls were in existence, they count Rose Bowl victories, which was universally recognized as the championship game. This is why they don't count '66 even though they were the ONLY team with a perfect record that year. If this was about "claiming" championships on their own, they would claim that year and probably 77 too.
