There's a reason I say may. He's got the measureables and talent, but at this point it's all about him continuing to improve. If he does he will absolutely be in the discussion, which is the whole point isn't it? To discuss.

No coach has wasted more NFL talent for sure.
Yet his average recruiting class is 8. So other teams consistently out recruit us every year. I really so no diff in talent between 10-15 teams every year. And i highly doubt these kids are nfl ready at the age of 17-19. So at some point in their careers at LSU they had to progress. Like a Morris claiborne, played qb and wr in hs, first round pick at cb.
You guys can bash Les all you want, but we will continue to win a lot of games under him and continue to pull great players from the surrounding sec states.

quote:RB10- I was asserting Miles as a coach at Bama would be doing as well as Saban, and a lot easier to deal with (for the public, the press, everyone). You say "this is ridiculous", but then seem to support Miles' case.
Les would be at least as good at Alabama as Saban, I suspect. And a hell of a lot easier to deal with.
This is ridiculous. Saban is the best coach in college, but sustaining success is almost as tough as building a program from scratch. Miles deserves more credit than he will ever get, but with the volatility of LSU fans he's going to be bashed no matter what.
You agree with me or not?

Saban is second all-time behind the Bear as far as SEC coaches go. A head coach nowadays is lucky if he only wins one national title in this day and age. To win four national titles in his last nine seasons as a college football coach is unheard of. With the likes of Neyland, Dooley, Spurrier, and Fulmer in the conversation, Les Miles can get in line when discussions are brought up about all-time great SEC coaches.

Miles would currently be behind Bear (Bama), Saban (Bama-NOT LSU though), and Spurrier (Florida-but not South Carolina). I realize we're talking coach at 1 school only, but that's relevant.
I'd put him ahead of Meyer (due to longevity); they were very close with Urban being ahead 2 BCS titles to 1, but Miles is still here and going strong, and Meyer left several years ago; his Ohio State record is irrelevant.
I'd put Miles at the top of the LSU coaching list; he has a better record and win percentage than Saban did, with more time in. He easily trumps everyone else on the list, and soon enough will be the all-time wins leader at LSU.
It would be interesting to compare Miles' tenure to all the "classic" coaches in the conference; I don't think too many would match him with wins/winning percentage, times finished in the top 10, percentage of time ranked, etc. Sure, Spurrier at Florida, Bear at Bama, Saban at Bama beat him. Who else does- does Fulmer beat him, or is Miles ahead? What about the others?
edit to add- Saban at Bama is up there all-time nationally, with or above guys like Jimmy Johnson etc- tons of success in a quick period of time.
Miles is gotta be in the next group, with guys like Tressel, Stoops etc. Goofy persona or not, he's churning out the wins.

Bear Bryant
Nick Saban
Steve Spurier
Wallace Wade
Johnny Vaught
Gen. Robert Neyland
Frank Thomas
Fat Phil
Shug Jordan
ARE ALL BETTER THAN LES MILES.
Les just took over a Saban enterprise.

Although the raw talent is incredible, high school football in Louisiana isn't anywhere near as advanced as it is in other states. LSU has had some incredible position coaches over the last 10-15 years.

The record shows Les did more with Saban's recruits

No, he doesn't have to be. The difference between Miles, Tressel, and Stoops is the fact that two of the three have undefeated seasons.
Miles maybe the greatest head coach in the history of LSU football, but that does not make him better than Vince Dooley, Johnny Vaught, Steve Spurrier, Phil Fulmer, or Robert Neyland. Hell...Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas, two of Alabama's more successful head football coaches, have more accolades to brag about than Les Miles.

Dinardo put up the recruiting fence. Sure sabans NC at lsu put a pit bull behind it but letd not forget saban won with dinardos players. He was not a good coach in 2004. Les could have won in 05 but the hurricane forced the team to play 11 straight weeks. 2006 should have been a NC type season too. He has had a few slip ups but he has also won us some games. Florida 07 for instance

I like Les
He seems like a really cool guy
But I wouldn't trade Gus for him honestly
