Some would argue that actually. There's a good chance Georgia has major differences with a new QB and a new staff (new schemes, different players getting pt). Butch has relatively little idea what Georgia is like.

I understand he wants to lower expectations because he's going to be entering his first year but damn man there are times when you just need to take a compliment.

IMO, this is more trying to keep a chip on his own players' shoulder. Saban does the same thing. You never want them to think they're good enough.

Really? Who will our QB be? When will Chubb be ready to play? How about our LBs? Who will get the nod?

Do you have any idea who our starting OL will be and what positions they will be at? If you, or Butch knows the answer to these questions please tell us, because we have no idea. And without the answers to these questions, how in the world could anybody know what kind of team we have?

I was unaware that these affected the way the games are played or the score.

If Dobbs were gone and you had absolutely no idea who was going to be your starting QB....Hurd was comign off a devastating knee injury....who would be on the starting OL or where they would be playing, and who your starting LBs was going to be, what would you say your prospects for the coming season be?

Q:How big would it be for the program to end that [Florida] streak?

Jones: I haven’t even thought of that. They’ll be one of the best teams if not the best team in our conference, when you look at their defense, when you look at their returning starters. You look at Georgia. I think Georgia is one of the best football teams in our conference as well, not just on the East side, but total. When you look at the competition on our side, it’s going to be a great challenge for us.

quote:

Question: Why do you think Georgia is one of the best teams?

Jones: You look at their skill set. You look at the line of scrimmage at their offense and defensive lines. You look at the success that program has had over a very long period of time. They return a number of starters. That’s going to be a challenge. You look across the board on our side, there’s a lot of returning starters a lot of very good football players, as does the West as well. I have a tremendous amount of respect for their program and everyone. Unless you compete in it every day… being in this conference is a grind, day in and day out.

Very broad answers (as Jones loves to give) about our 2 main competitors in the East. Its not like he laid out exactly what his perceptions of UGAs strengths/weaknesses, whos going to start, how the QB will play, Chubb's %, who will step up on D, etc. He said theyre going to be a good team based on your returning starters, talent, and general consistency. And that's it. Ya'll are digging way too deep.

True. And I have no problem with what he said. it was Vol fans getting all out of sorts with Smart's reactions. We were simply pointing out why Smart reacted the way he did.

I edited my post a little but same general idea. I think he should've just accepted the compliment and move on. But I also don't think its a big deal either way, and im sure KS didn't intend for it to be.

Also, for context for Vol posters, Smart has gone out of his way not to compliment (or insult) UGA's players' talent since he took the job. All he talks about are intangible things (effort, toughness, etc.). IMO, this is just more of that.

Probably not. And, in Butch's defense, he was probably responding to a question worded to get a controversy going. Media does that sometimes.

I think you're getting overly specific about things. This was a generalized statement very much based on knowing the talent UGA has on its roster. How that plays out this year is still a bit of mystery but the overall talent is known despite pieces of the puzzle being missing.

quote:

IMO, this is more trying to keep a chip on his own players' shoulder. Saban does the same thing. You never want them to think they're good enough.

Maybe so but the way in which it was worded came across as hilariously strange. It's one thing to say 'well we still have a lot to work on (insert general coachspeak answer)' and to downplay things a bit but the insertion of 'he hasn't been to our practices' makes it strange as hell sounding because it comes across as defensive which you would expect from an insult not a compliment. It's the kinda weird reaction I'd expect out of Harbaugh.

I mean I suppose some of it may be that he's dealing with the press for the first time as an HC and there's pressure there as well but I don't think it came out quite right. That said, the extent of it's impact is on the lolwut? level of things said. IOW, not a big deal but crazy funny.

We shite the bed twice. Arkansas just outplayed us when it mattered, and Bama just out talented us.

But yes, we shite the bed against Florida and Oklahoma. But it's not like they were bad teams, at least not before Grier got suspended.

Kirby is just trying to make sure his team stays grounded and doesn't get caught up in praise sent their way from a rival. It makes sense and yes, that is exactly the way Saban would handle it.

That should be cause for concern. People ridiculing Kirby for acting like possibly the best coach in college football history is reminiscent of people making fun of Saban and his "process". Of course, that was four long national championships ago.

Listen to this guy. He knows his stuff.

Holy shite this is a dumb analogy.

You might have a point if spoken words couldnt share sarcasm and humor among other things.

Yep, just typical coach speak on both sides. Only an idiot could make it more than that.

I believe the actual quote was something to the effect of not only are we one of the best teams in the East, but in the whole conference. AKA - this is the new "we're young". It's Jones deflecting pressure and expectations from the Vol program, which is fully expected this time of year.

Kirby's response, as many others have already acknowledged, is simply more of what is expected this time of year. Flatter the other programs, deflect the positive and keep your guys "hungry". To take it as anything more than that is a pretty clear indication that either this is your first rodeo or you just *want* it to be something that it's not.
