Something to consider when comparing RBs is that Jalen unlike all the other top backs hasn't had the luxury of playing in a pro-style offense or having a fullback. That makes it far more difficult to make a fair comparison.

One thing that may change Hurd's production next season is the offset I. We used it in our bowl game to great effect and I hope we continue to do so. Running the option from the shotgun, our RB never knows ahead of time whether he's getting the ball and that causes a lot of hesitation on the RBs part and of course no fullback. With the offset I we saw Hurd get a full head of steam and go for a lot more yards at a pop (we used our standard formation as well but Jalen was faster/better in the I).

I still think we'll use our power spread/option a lot but I also think/hope that we'll be using the offset I as well. Both Dobbs and Hurd looked comfortable in it and we need the play action that can be run from it. Kamara will benefit as well and I like the idea of running multiple formations.

Not many offenses outside of LSU and Richt-era UGA that play with a fullback.

And to be fair those two have the best returning RBs in Fournette and Chubb (assuming he's 100) and let's be honest UGA has become great at running the ball with that system. Not lining up from the shotgun/power option and having to worry about whether you're getting the ball or not matters a lot (fullback or no) and at present Hurd never knows whether or not he's getting the ball.

4.4 yards per carry in college is pretty bad

Besides Fournette, Cook, and Henry (2 1st rounders and a Heisman winner) and Ralph Webb (I think, and almost all of Webb's yards came on 1 carry where the ref helped block the linebacker.)

Nobody else even came close to 100 yards against Florida

Why is so great about 100 yards at a low clip?

Stanley Williams had 80 yards on only 16 carries (1/2 of what Hurd had).

Russell Hansbrough had 74 yards on only 9 carries (<1/3 of what hurd had)

De'Veon Smith had 3 fewer carries and 2 more yards.

Hurd was probably the 7th most productive RB vs UF... WOW.

In fairness, we played UF before they fell apart. That matters. Hurd also did well against Bama. Hurd has to carry more to get the yardage because our OL sucks and because we run an option from the shotgun. Our OL is so bad I've never seen him NOT earn every yard.

Florida's defense didn't fall apart until after the Alabama game.

And I don't think Hurd is a bad back at all. I just don't think he's criminally underrated.

I think he's been overrated arguably a bit, especially for a 5-star. 5-star backs dont average 4.4 yards per carry.

The teams that have played against him don't think he's overrated, I fricking guarantee it. But you have a Tennessee hate boner, so I don't know why I'm wasting my time

I do but that's because I see him run into brick walls every game and make something out of nothing. He's good for a couple of yards simply by knocking defenders down without help from the OL. I will say that so far he hasn't shown much top end speed though. He's a punisher not a scat back.

That said, on the rare occasions he does get a full head of steam he goes for a lot of chunk yardage. He's gotten faster every year so speed training is helping but he's never gonna be the fastest RB as big as he is.

But 'criminally underrated' is a relative thing. I'd go more for underrated since plenty of NFL scouts love him. The college world is the one that shows him less love.

I actually like Tennessee, probably my most liked SEC team outside of LSU. But Hurd is an overrated player. 4.4 yards per carry is extremely low for what's supposed to be an "elite" back. You cant even come close to mentioning him in the same breath of the elite backs in college. None of them average that low per carry.

Again we run a spread option from the shotgun (he never knows if he's getting the ball) and has a shitty OL. He's lucky to get 4.4 ypc. Very few backs would including some big names. THAT is how bad our OL has been.

You act like there are no positives from the spread when it comes to running the ball. Some defenses can have a hard time determining where the ball is going to go and makes them play honest.
