You're not going to get an established coach from a high major, and you're unlikely to get a Stevens/Smart type coach from a mid-major. You're most likely to get a young up-and-comer as your best option, which is exactly what Grant was.

So, yes. And honestly, Grant hasn't done a bad job. A few NIT seasons early into a coach's tenure don't doom the program. His offense sucks, but I mainly blame that on the unathletic, unskilled bigs.

Next season will define his tenure, though. It should be his best team yet. We'll see.

Obviously it's not an exact science in hiring a great coach, but accepting mediocrity is always worse.

I agree. But this is one season of regression and it was caused by his roster management error that will be mostly fixed with this incoming class. Most Bama fans who actually follow the team, knew we were skating on very thin ice and couldn't afford any injuries to our big men with only 3 posts, and 10 scholarships total. We return everybody except Steele and add two new posts and return one injured post. Bama should be a top 25ish team next year, and if he fails to achieve a quality team of that kind of caliber then we need to part ways. Firing a coach prematurely is ALWAYS a mistake.

The talent the state of Alabama was producing at that point was absurd. It is ridiculous that we weren't national contenders with the talent we had on those teams. The state of Alabama has been going through a massive talent drought since Grant has been here. 2013 C Jimmie Taylor is the first and only D-1 post prospect Bama has produced in 4 years.

LSU hasn't beat ANYONE this year. Plus they had by far the easiest SEC schedule among SEC teams.

Ah shite, I meant Bama, not LSU. I just always click reply to the last post to reply to the thread. I think Bama would be a lock in the tourney with their sec record and no bad ooc losses.

I agree.

For all the criticism of Grant as far as coaching, had they not lost Engstrom from an already thin front line and immediately suffered some bad OOC losses, Alabama would likely be around an 7-8 seed and people would be singing a completely different tune on Grant.

Grant's recruited pretty well in most regards: Alabama's perimeter players are a very solid young group and why they're better than most of the SEC right now.

However, he's missed badly on bringing in the one difference making big man. It's really that simple in my opinion. Add that one guy and all the pieces are in place and they're young too.

Everyone can mention Miami this year or Texas or Jones' class at LSU but let's not forget that Texas hasn't been good for a couple of years now, Miami may just as easily be in the NIT too in coming years and Grant also had a top class at Bama and players like Releford, Lacey, Randolph, Cooper etc are easily good enough for a Top20 team if there's close to equal post talent.

The reason for optimism at Alabama under Grant is that, unlike a lot of middling NIT teams, this team is one missing piece away from being really good instead of suffering from average talent across the board.

It was also the shittiest SEC schedule for a tournament hopeful team. 3 of the 4 decent RPI teams we got to play we didn't get a return home game against. We also play up or down to the competition we play so this type of schedule only hurts us.

This is about Grant, which even most of your fanbase agrees he's not exactly that great.
