re: How can some of you not grasp the importance of conference superiority?

Then it's horse shite. LSU and Bama fans are consistently more outspoken about the SEC Pride garbage than anyone else, IMO.
SEC Pride is for the cellar dwellers of the conference who need something to attach their identity to in order to feel important. Bama fans haven't bought into that shite in almost a decade.

As a fellow Bama fan, I would like to tell you to GFY.

Your position is rational and used to be my attitude. This board has literally made me hate most of the SEC though.
I took great joy in A&M's hilarious collapse and pulling against Bama is a given. I pretty much always pull for SEC East teams though.

While I agree that conference superiority is important, who I pull for or against in any particular game has never affected the outcome that I know of.

I see no good reason to pull for Tennessee

Tennessee has been arse for a decade and we've done alright.

That's not a fact. That's a complete fabrication based on nothing more than your poorly formed opinion.
Nope.
From 2011:
LINK
quote:
Strength of Schedule: Similar analysis. By reputation, people would say the SEC schedule for Alabama. By results on field, Oklahoma State’s was tougher. Alabama’s non-conference opponents were worse, and they did not get to play Georgia or South Carolina from the East. Advantage: Oklahoma State.
quote:
Reputation: Let’s face it, this matters. If Oklahoma, or Ohio State, or Florida, had Oklahoma State’s profile, going against another team that did not win its conference, this would not be much of a debate. That team would be in the title game. Throw in the SEC reputational advantage in recent title games, and it is Advantage: Alabama, big time.
You don't get that reputation without the entire SEC being good in out of conference games.
I know you love to hate Auburn, but allowing it to cloud common fricking sense is delusional.

I understand your position as a Bama fan.
Admittedly, my opinion as an MSU fan is the minority.
That said, I refuse to blindly support things that further bolster Alabama and make them even more of an empire than they already are. Like the 9 game conference schedule. Saban started pushing that when he figured out the points system and realized he could pad his season stats by beating another SEC team with higher rankings. The 9th SEC game wasn't going to do anything FOR State.
Bama being a perennial NC contender is good for the conference on whole. But, I contend that if Bama wasn't always playing for the title then MSU would have signed players like Raekwon Davis, Scott Lashley and Nigel Knott. These kind of players are just jersey #s at Bama , but they could boost an MSU roster that needs quality depth. Heck, they could be difference makers at MSU.
In the end we all have to look out for what's best for our schools

That website and article are completely inconsequential and irrelevant.
Oklahoma State lost to a 4 touchdown underdog in Week 12. It would have required voters to jump them from 5 to 2 to overtake Alabama, who had completely demolished every team on their schedule except LSU. The Harris Poll also had them at 5th.
For reference - in 2011, Auburn went 8-5 and Tennessee went 5-7.
Bama doesn't need them to win shite for us to be in the spotlight. We built our own reputation, and as long as we win, we're in. And there's not any evidence to suggest otherwise.

I think it's more situational than just "always root for the SEC team OOC". I have no need or desire to pull for Auburn this weekend against Clemson... A) I've been to a shitload of Clemson games and it would likely be my second or third team that I mildly give a shite about behind UGA. B) We fight against them for recruits on the regular... We go up against Clemson as well, but for most positions that matter, Auburn is a more significant threat (see: Fields).
In the case of UT/GT on Monday, besides pulling for my wife, I was relatively neutral. There was no inherent advantage to either team winning, as we'll play them both. If anything, a GT win might have given us a bigger SOS bump at the end of the season.
In any case, UGA's fate will be held exclusively in our own hands... If we make it out of the east with no more than 2 losses (maybe one conference, one out to ND?) and managed to win in Atlanta (not sure I buy either of these things being remotely plausible just yet, but we'll run a hypothetical), we'd be in the playoffs... only exception would be if all other conference champs are undefeated/one loss and at that point I don't believe we'd go in regardless of the opinion of the conference. On the other hand, even if we make it to Atlanta with no losses, but lose in the SEC Championship, I see next to no path that puts us in the playoffs. Alabama making it in was less to do with SEC perception and more to do with Alabama/Saban perception. I'm not sure any other team gets that leeway. Next closest thing would likely be OSU last season getting the nod, and again that's school and/or coach perception over conference, otherwise doesn't Penn St go in as B1G champs?

After watching Alabama win a game, the next best tv game is watching Tennessee and Auburn lose.

Didn't happen at the ones I've been at, and I've been to three national championships, and several of the kickoff classics. Only time I remember it happening was the 2008 game vs Clemson. If it did happen, it was a small portion of the fanbase.

The ones that do can't let go of their cellar dwelling mindset, I guess.
