He won't be at Auburn too much longer as he will bolt for Texas after Strong is fired or for the NFL

i dunno supposedly Gus is a small town guy and really likes his situation but who knows, as far is how well does his career goes, it`s all about keeping a very good defensive co-ordinator, if he has one his teams will be elite if not, you basically get last year.

Year 2 at Auburn: 8-5 (worst season as a head coach) and an Outback Bowl loss

Isn't this only his 4th year total as a HC?

Mhm. Not sure how that changes the validity of that sentence.

He just needs to show any improvement, even if it's just one win. If Auburn wins less than 8 you'll probably start seeing the same things said about him that were said about Sumlin (at least somewhat) and questioning his actual coaching ability.

To be fair though some coaches do rebound after 3 seasons of doing worse each year. Bert went from 12-1 to 9-4 to 7-6 his first three years at Wisconsin, and then followed up with 3 consecutive 10+ win seasons.

Yeah, which is exactly why I expect Bert to do well at Arkansas in the next few years. He clears out the program and then builds it up. Doesn't always look pretty, but he does a solid job. Malzahn has a track record of utilizing what he's got to the fullest extent he can. I know the former can be successful long term... not sure about the latter yet.

I think Gus is a good coach and he can be a successful coach. My biggest concern about him is that he is a very intuitive, call it on the fly, go with your gut coach.

Most of the time he does great with that style. He does, however, seem to have a couple of games each year where he doesn't fall into that comfortable rhythm or he falls out of it and then his offense tends to stall. Every team has bad offensive games every now and then, but with the style of play he is comfortable with Auburn has to score points and a buttload of them.

We know he can get hot with the right team and make a serious run for a national title. We also know that when things aren't clicking the record can really drop off. He's still worth it for Auburn.

So annoyingly fricking true. That is my biggest complaint with him. I think that, as he ages and settles in to the job a bit more, he'll figure out how to deal with that a little bit better.

I actually agree a lot with this & honestly that matches AU football too. We get hot some years & go undefeated then bust in others. The key really is can he field a respectable defense. In 2010 that defense forced turnovers & always made the last stop. 2014 defense could never force the last stop. He doesn't need top 10 defense. Top 50 defense & his offense will put us in the race for SEC title every season.

Honestly though 8-5 is disappointing other than the UGA game we were in every single one of those games. Other team just made one more play than us. That's gonna happen in the SEC. He has to show some kind of consistency though to be taken seriously moving forward. I think this is a 10 win team if the defense performs at the level I think it can (which is basically a mid range SEC defense).

Just ridiculous the level of coaching talent in the SEC West though

If he doesn't win a NC within the next 3 years AU fans should be very disappointed. I think that's all he will have Boom for.

Gus Bus offense + Boom defense should be a nasty combo, but I think it will take the defense one more year before they are elite.

I think even without a Natty in the next three years he's still worth it for Auburn. He's a wildcard. Bama will almost always have more money, more recruits, and more headlines. But with Malzahn if he is feeling it that game and gets into a groove where you just CANNOT get his team off the field he can beat any team in college.

Well it changes the context a bit. If he had been a HC 15 years and only had one 8-5 season it's a lot better than having 3 seasons where he only has 1 ten win season

Hit his peak in year 1. It's all down hill from there.

Predict he will have a Tuberville-esque career at AU

Considering what Tubs did to Bama while he was at Auburn you might want to be careful what you wish for.

Middle of the road long term. Some good years, some bad. 2013 was extremely lucky, unless you consider 80 yard hail mary's NOT LUCK. Funny how he turns right around and loses 5 games the very next season with the exact same senior qb.

He's not great and he's not terrible. He's mediocre and his overall long term record will reflect it.

What kind of career do you expect Gus Malzahn to have at Auburn? Top tier/mid tier? Will he outlast Richt/Saban/Miles?

A short career without a natty title. Maybe another conference title. That is a good career though.

Depends on what you call mid tier. If he wins 2 conference titles in about 5 years or so that is solid.

No he will not outlast those coaches since he will head to the NFL the first chance he gets.
