Its a good list, but its mostly about QOL rankings combined with bigtime college sports atmosphere.

I think QOL in the actual city is a big part of what makes a college town great, though.

One of the reasons Fayetteville's grown so much in the past 15 years is because people come here for school and never leave (or like me, get back as fast as they can).

For every actual college student in Fayetteville, there's probably another unenrolled 20-something just hanging out working for peanuts because they like living here.

Kind of like Austin 25 years ago...

I dont get why people consider state capitals true college towns. If the college isnt the reason people know the town exist then it shouldnt be considered a true college town. Also if its considered a city instead of a town then its not a college town. Just my opinion on Austin being in there. Its a great city, but its the capitol of Texas, come on

So medium to large cities can't be college towns because they wouldn't wither and die if the universities weren't there? Sorry, but that doesn't make sense to me. Austin is a big city, but it still maintains that college town vibe because the presence of UT and its influence on the city are undeniable. I'm sure that it's the same way in Columbus, OH.

I don't know what the hell Lexington, KY is doing on that list. It's a nice city I guess, but nothing to rave about. And it's not a small town either. It's larger than Baton Rouge isn't it?

Lexington is badass, but not much of a "college town" IMO. It's more of a horse town than a college town from what I could gather on my trips up there

um yea. I think a college town is a town thats all about the college. Thats just what I think, but if a town is known as a beach town and the beach is gone the town would have lost most of its interest. Same for ski towns. Thats just how I see college towns. If you take the college out of the town the town suffers tremendously. Austin wouldnt

I agree with this. Just even saying "college town" gives me that smaller town feel. It just sounds like the town is all about the college.

Austin is a city with a college in it.

Austin's identity is impossible to separate from UT. Austin is a big city now, but 30 years ago it wasn't, and thats when it really developed its vibe. It got a great music scene because there were 40k college kids and another 40k college drop outs living there smoking weed.

When I think of college town, I think of places like Madison, Athens, or Fayetteville.

Yeah, there's other stuff going on in Fayetteville aside from the University, but its still very much central to the identity of the place. We have excellent parks, trails, Botanical Gardens, night life, and a lot of the crazy, artsy stuff you expect to find in real college towns, like a few roller derby teams, protest monkeys, lots of gays, natural food stores, eclectic restaurants, and tons of liberal hippies.

I don't think the same vibe or quality of life exists in really small college towns.

Fayetteville is an interesting, fun place to live year round for people of all ages and persuasions. Its a great place to be a college student, but its also a great place to live, period. The University has everything to do with that, though. Its a symbiosis.

Oxford reminds me of Fayetteville 25 years ago, when it was much smaller, more isolated, and much, much more focused on the University. Thats not a bad thing. Its a true college town in that sense. Fayetteville being a larger, more diverse, busier place hasn't detracted from its value as a cool place to go to school. I think its added to it because there's so much more to do now than there was 15 or 20 years ago.

I remember as a kid in the late 80s, students used to wear blazers and stuff to football games. By the late 90s, that was so passe and seemed ridiculous. Now, I can't imagine it. There's too much diversity and hippiedom for that to even be possible. Part of that comes with a bigger town, more diverse social scene, and more opportunities to branch out.

No one group can dominate when there's more going on in the town.

I'm stoned. Sorry for the post of biblical proportions.

Kinda, but the university defines the city.

There are a couple of big cities like that.
Very few are in the south because of the higher poverty rates that accompany big cities down here. Also, there are too many conservatives for there to be any legit college cities.

The poll is Top College Sports Towns, Why not Baton Rouge? It has 2 Universities, something is always going on in the sports world. Granted we do not have a Pro Team like some of these places have but after all it is Top College Sports Towns not Pro towns. Also you do not have to drive a 100 miles for an airport to go anywhere in the USA. Had the least people affected by the latest down turn in the economy and also LSU had NC's in not 1 but 4 Sport's over the last 10 years, that's Football-2 and Baseball-2, and Southern had 2 NC's in Black College Football not to count the Conference titles that these 2 well knon Universities has also.

Baton Rouge should have been in the top 10 or even top 5 for that matter!

Nice to see my school at #1. It was a great 4 years and I think I'll raise my kids there eventually.

Forbes should stay away from sports articles and rankings. This isn't the first shitty list of something theyve cooked up

Take off the P and G glasses. Baton Rouge is a shite city and would be 10x shittier without LSU

That part of Arkansas has some serious corporations/money. No doubt it should be on this list.

negative. maybe top 20. BR is not a true college town.

I'd go with:

1) Ann Arbor
2) Athens
3) Fayetteville
4) College Station
5) Madison
6) Eugene
7) Boulder

Wrong.

I live in Lexington now, and it is better than any other SEC city, with the exception of Athens.
