Gainesville is terrible. Tallahassee is only better by comparison to Gainesville.
Miami is the easier sell IMO despite Donna Shacrazy and poor facilities.

When I drive in on 540-N I always take the Greenville exit so I can take Razorback Rd, drive past Baum, and skip the eyesore that is MLK.
I hope the city does more to beautify the main traffic arteries like they did on College between Mountain and Maple. It would probably cost too much, though.

The Rock to Maple improvements are already planned to go the length of College between North and MLK.
Former Mayor Coody had mentioned an A&P initiative to redress MLK from 540 to College as a part of the push to get an expanded WAC located downtown. I haven't heard anything about that in over a year.
Block Ave is being rebuilt this spring/summer to match Dickson's streetscape, connecting the Square and Dickson better. Should really spur some new development there.

Have more businesses moved to downtown? I've not worked in Fayetteville in 3 years and feel really disconnected from it.

Dickson stays leased to the hilt mostly, and there are a few new places there.
Center Street has revived a bit, with Damgoode Pies, and Oseguera's opening up there alongside Taste of Thai.
The Square stays leased. Block Ave still has the handful of bars it always did. I think a rebuilt Block Ave will make more of the storefronts there attractive as bars/restaurants as opposed to the mix of uses there now, offices, attorneys, a spa, retail, etc. The renovations will add a lot of parking there, and make it a lot more ped-friendly. I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Also, First Thursdays has become really popular. It features new art openings the first Thursday of every month at the Fayetteville Underground gallery and art studio which takes up the ground floor of East Square Plaza (former BofA building). Its become a night time equivalent of Farmer's Market.

The city is considering doing a full-on Thursday Farmer's Market on the Square to compliment it.
Downtown is strong as eva and looks to only get stronger.

The square is more of where I am interested in. I'd love for Block St. to become more like Dickson St.

It is headed that way. Right now there's Tables & Ale, Tangerine, Lightbulb Club, Maxines and Hugo's on Block between Dickson and Center.
When the street improvements are completed, I expect to see more places open up there. The corner of Block and Dickson was supposed to be that giant hotel/condo that the hippies sued to prevent from being built. If it could be developed into something reasonable, like 4-5 stories with retail/restaurant on the bottom, it would really connect the Square and Dickson.
I find myself going to Block St more than Dickson lately anyway. Combined with the new places up on Center Street, the Square and Block are like a second Dickson Street already.

I am not sure but thought those developers went under. (Not naming names)

Dead fricking wrong. Seriously, shut the frick up.

Yeah it was a Barber deal. 15 floors. The city approved it after a contentious planning commission and city council process. There was huge uproar over it and it would have really changed the character of the street. I personally don't like Legacy or any of the other shite Barber was involved in.
That land is for sale now. Not sure which bank owns it.

Gay.
That would have hurt Fayetteville.

True dat. Immediately after it was submitted, a new 6 floor height limit on Dickson Street was put into place.

We have similar limits in Oxford. Nothing is allowed to be taller than the Courthouse downtown.
We have a couple 6 story buildings downtown, but they're built at the bottom of the hill that the square and the courthouse is built on top of.

Thats cool. I like the midrise city plan.
Fayetteville has/is transitioned to form-based code with a few different zoning districts. The downtown core has a 15 story height limit, I think, but thats a very small area just around the Square which doesn't include Dickson.
The only area without building height restrictions is the far north side.
There are strict signage restrictions, too, and landscape and water run-off mitigation requirements. In short, its very difficult to develop in Fayetteville these days.
That 15 story development actually got approved by the city, but the city was immediately sued by a local collective, which tied the deal up in court long enough for the developer to go bankrupt.

Awesome. The dip between Maple and North really needs a makeover. Block getting rebuilt will be a huge improvement, too. That street has a lot of wasted potential and right now it's kind of a gap between Dickson and the Square that doesn't have much going on besides a couple of my favorite dives and a few businesses on the block right next to the Square.
