(the switching teams part)

So one of our members was hammered today while playing golf(go figure) and proceeds to tell his life story.

He is from Alabama and he was a Bama fan his whole life. Went to a community college his first two years and lived with his parents. After getting his associates he applied to school for the engineering program. Auburn gave him a scholly for academics, Bama did not.

He didnt want to go to Auburn not fully "in" it. If he was going to go he was going to be 100% committed. So he became an Auburn fan.

He is in his early 40's.

He has an Auburn golf bag, towel and hats... Full blown fan.

I don't see how you can just decide to a fan of a team like that.

It's one reason I can't get that into NFL or MLB. I've tried to be Titans and Braves fans, but it's not the same. I just can't make myself truly care.

that sounds like a rare event; most fans stay fans regardless of the school

If I had attended Ole Miss for two years, I would have switched my fandom, unless I was planning on going to State for Grad school. I think where you get your bachelor degree from should be where your allegiance goes in most circumstances. If you don't switch to that school, you won't enjoy your college experience the way you're supposed to.

I grew up a FSU fan and had a small scholly for academics but UF is a better school.

I don't get the people that attend a school but still are a rivals fan, happened a lot with kids from the Miami area going to UF.

As a graduate of the University of Alabama, the only way I would become a fan of auburn is if one of my kids played for them.

As for this guy, if he went to school at auburn, there's nothing wrong with being an auburn fan. That happens quite a bit with high school kids going to the school they didn't grow up rooting for.

I am sure it happens on occasion among all schools. Bama could have given me a full ride for my education and there is zero chance of me becoming a Tide fan. Just not made that way. In fact had Auburn seen the demise so many here had hoped, and lost their football program I could never choose Bama as an alternative. In fact I would choose MSU or Vandy first if I was given the choice of #1 Bama or bottom of the barrel MSU, Vandy.

Half of Louisville's student body are UK fans. But that's different since it's a commuter school and they're just kids who are from Louisville and want to stay home for whatever reason.

I never understand this. I was a diehard Bama fan LONG before college was on the radar. I just can't imagine switching jerseys and trying to be a "fan" of some new program. Being a Bama fan is ingrained in me...my double helix is Crimson and White.

MOST people become fans of the team of the school that they choose to attend. Some will hang on to old attachments, but most don't.

It's not at all unusual.

This. I grew up a die hard UK fan because both my parents are die hard UK fans, even though they both went and and graduated from Louisville. I just couldn't even fathom switching allegiances if I hadn't gone to UK.

I grew up an Auburn fan. Got an athletic scholarship to play at a small school. Went to Alabama for grad school and attended almost every home Alabama game. I never once even had a thought of changing my allegiance from Auburn to Alabama. By that time it just wasn't even a consideration.

I as an FSU fan growing up (uncle was roommates with Bobby Bowden in college). But went to school at LSU. Wasn't really a fan until during the 2000 basketball season. After that and the up and down 2000 football season, I was sold.

It may be hard to believe if your alma mater is a school like TCU but in most cases people are proud of their Alma mater and become passionate in their support. I have a few friends that are still huge/bigger Bama fans than Auburn even though they go to AU. They still are rabid AU fans in non iron bowl games and huge fans

My bro grew up going to State games with me and my dad. He attended them with me while he was in high school. He ended up at ole miss for five years. Is he supposed to live in their dorms, hang in the grove, be surrounded by ole miss people, mingle with their players, get drunk on their square, get student tickets to their games, and remain a state fan? That would be fricking awful. Then after he got his degree from there, donate to MSU? Hell no. That would make college way less fun.

My cousin grew up in the Knoxville area, went to Tennessee and is a die hard Bama fan. He wears really tall white tube socks. Very strange dude.

ETA: I grew up going to Tennessee games but never was a fan.

Happens everywhere. Endless reasons why someone might go to a different or even rival school of the one they grew up pulling for. Some switch allegiance and some don't

My cousin was a Bama fan growing up, went to Auburn and became a boog. I don't talk to him anymore.

Just the opposite for me.....I grew up a Miami fan when UM football sucked. I played JC baseball for 2 years and Skip offered me a full ride to Miami for my last 2 years. I also got a full ride to LSU. I couldn't care less about Miami now even after they became an elite college football program.....and I hate them even more in baseball. I bleed purple and geauxld now.
