Eh, it’s not a brag so much as a warning.

Take it for what it’s worth.

Hmm. I thought the name sounded familiar. I don’t visit there often anymore but you were banded years ago weren’t you?

Oh, yes. In the great purge - which essentially killed the board. I was one of the big fish, and such a pity. I’m a genuinely nice guy, too.

Freeze may be a good recruiter, but this is poor program management
It really is. He is focusing all of his effort on recruiting and zero on actual coaching. It pisses me off something fierce. I get he needs to secure these high school kids because theyre the future, but he needs proof of concept. Having a losing season and shitting the bed throughout the season shortens his leash considerably

Is he becoming Gus 2.0?

I would imagine Aubies life is pretty much hell already. Their 2 biggest rivals winning and playing for natties
while they get destroyed by Maryland. A hoe loving coach who couldn’t find time to prep for a bowl and actually told the world about his dereliction.
You would think after all the scandal AU just went thru with their former coach and his alleged relationship with his secretary’ they would be a little more careful who they entrusted their program to. No one ever accused AU of being smart

What does this even mean?

Head coach at Auburn is 24-7-365. It’s a grind. Many people can take a grind for a while but if they have flaws they’ll eventually surface. Freeze is rumored to have a checkered past….if so the job may prove too big for him. The whole redemption story angle generally blows up eventually…flawed characters gonna flaw

If I’m his boss I gotta know why he ain’t doing both? Is the job to big for him? One would imagine that game planning AND recruiting is the expectation, no? I’d be slightly concerned about the future at UGA if Smart publicly admitted he was unable to do the entire job

Didn't Smart almost walked away from it all?

He said he considered it. You’d be a fool not to. It’s a grind and after a few years money can’t be much of a motivating factor….

Buddy, you can still recruit during the Dead Period.

Writing letters, sending texts and making phone calls are all permitted.

Remember,Kirby went to Auburn to talk to them about the open Head Coaching job. It didn’t work out. The talk was Kirby wanted to hire his assistants and was told that would not happen. So he looked around and then went back to Tuscaloosa.
We dodged a big bullet.t

This is past 30 years, but did Pat Dye ( the guy AU's field is named after )have to step down as AD & coach amidst an NCAA investigation ?

It's a long story, but basically Dye got fricked over by a turncoat traitor player named Eric Ramsey. He called Dye and his assistants asking for money and then recorded the convos. Remember, this was the late 80's and recording a phone call took equipment, which makes one wonder who put him up to it. Why is a 19 year old college football player recording his coaches? Why did he have a lawyer before most of this went down? Why would you try and take down the HC who gave you a scholly and was agreeing to commit violations to help you financially (after you asked)? Why did he go to 60 Minutes and give them the tapes? Who was behind it, really?

People from outside Alabama don't realize how ruthless the bammers are. They will stop at nothing to try and take down AU, especially when AU is having success (as Dye was). And then they have the gall to say it is AU who is obsessed with Bama.

Remember, Dye dominated Bama on the field and had just won four straight. Bama was still reeling after Bear's retirement. While pretty good some years, they never could get back to Bear's dominance. They had a 10-0 season in 1989, but AU beat them and ruined their NC hopes. Also, remember Dye is the one who forced Bama to allow the IB to be played in JHS for the first time. Bama fought that tooth and nail and didn't want to give AU the privilege of playing the game at their home stadium. So the bammers really hated Dye with a passion. Not long after AU killed Bama's '89 season, the Ramsey stuff hits the press. Pretty convenient.

Interestingly, Bama also got in trouble around this time for the Gene Jelks stuff. What was funny is Jelks was a DB who covered Ramsey in the Iron Bowl. That is quite fitting.
