What he did in year 1, combined with the mass exodus of top flight coaches, has me convinced. Name one HC or coordinator currently in the SEC who's not named Saban who is better/more talented? I hope he's at LSU for the long haul but unless he's a chavis type (career DC) he'll get a good head coaching offer soon. He's also the biggest reason I'm optimistic about LSU football this year. Dude put on a coaching clinic against Bama, watch it again if you don't believe me.

That and let's face it, based purely on coaching talent, the SEC is 3rd or 4th in the P5.

ETA: A strong case has been made for Mullen, and I agree. He's probably #2 in the SEC. After that though, I'll stick with Aranda and the unknown. None of the other 12 clowns who regularly do less with more should really excite any fan base, and that includes LSU/Orgeron.

Again, this thread is as much about how good DA is as it is about how much the coaching in the SEC has declined.

Dan Mullen had Mississippi State ranked #1 in the country less than three years ago. He's done more with less and would probably win at a very high level at a white collar program.

Aranda coached a defense filled with four and five star talent.

Mullen is a good coach, would you take him over DA if you had to build a team from scratch? I wouldn't. Look what DA did at Wisc, talk about doing more w less.

Also, how far have we fallen as a conference when the Miss St coach is the one being talked about as #2???

Can we not brag about this? I'm one of those that think Aranda has the potential to be the next elite coach, btw.

It just sounds so stupid and pathetic... "we have one of the top young coaches on staff, and we just opened up our HC position. So we hire a retread with a poor record at Ole Miss and an average record as USC/LSU interim instead, so this hot young coach will be leaving for somewhere else in a couple years max. YAY!!!"

So, why didn't LSU hire him to be the HC instead of Ed?

Um, hell yes

Random d-coordinator with no head coaching experience vs Dan Mullen? Seriously? Do I need to go down the list of elite coordinators who have been average or terrible as head coaches?
