I have a good friend who's a Kansas graduate. When it comes to their athletic program, he does a lot of boasting, but mostly, he's just full of shite.

Arkansas Toothpick.

My BIL collects historic knives and he has a couple.

Very fine steel for its time.

also bored so I looked up some more on gopher tortoises

quote:

During the Great Depression, Gopher tortoise was known as the “Hoover Chicken” because they were eaten by poor people out of work.

quote:

The gopher tortoise is seen as a keystone species because it digs burrows that provide shelter for 360 other animal species.

quote:

Gopher tortoises are known as a keystone species. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states the gopher tortoise provides refuge for as many as 350 to 400 species. The burrows are used for feeding, resting, reproduction, and protection from temperature extremes, moisture loss, and predators. These species include gopher frogs (Rana capito), several species of snake, such as the eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon corais couperi), small invertebrates, and burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia). Therefore, conservation efforts focused on the gopher tortoise aid these species as well.

quote:

Gopher tortoises have been kept as pets, preventing them from reproducing in their local populations. Captured gopher tortoises can be raced in tortoise races. This practice was banned in Florida in 1989.

As far as the Missouri and Kansas history, I've never been a big American history buff, but this thread makes American history seem pretty cool and interesting. Btw, why is Tennessee the "Hog Drivers"?

The Border War is really interesting, and had some of the most violent acts in the Civil War. Including the burning of Lawrence, kansas. The jayhawks would raid in Missouri and take everything they stole to Lawrence for storage and to sell it off for profit. Furniture, clothing, linens, tools, whatever they could haul away. It got old after several years. So Quantrill's raiders attacked Lawrence and burned most of the city to the ground; they also killed about 200 or so men and boys big enough to fight. The Border War was vicious.

I wondered about the "hog drivers" of Tennessee too!

It's almost like football was created to channel those feelings for both sides, without the loss of life

Interdasting.

Ya know football was first played in 1869 only a few years after the end of the Civil War. I don't recognize the first true game until 1875 when it was 11 on 11, with tackling to end plays, and the oval shaped ball.

Those knives are great as collectibles. I'd be willing to bet that there's a lot of that type of thing lying around the property of some old homesteads, just waiting to be found. Interesting stuff.

ETA: In the area I grew up, there were some old Confederate fortifications remaining from the Civil War. When I was a kid, I found several small war artifacts in the area before it became "protected", which btw, is a good thing.

A guy I know uses a knife just like that one to kill big boars. He says it's the best knife to get through the shoulder plate that basically acts as like pads for them when fighting. I prefer the .300 mag.

Remember, some of us are "Hog" fans.

Seriously, I had to kill a big boar one time and all I had was a Browning .22 auto. Took a full magazine of hollow points. They are tough.

That's a rough looking bunch. For a second, I thought one of them was playing with another one's leg, but it was his own.

Notice the single star? Wonder if that relates to the "Lone Star".

Confederate troops from Alabama were called Yellowhammers after the bird. During one of the big battles during the war Alabama troops were having to fall back. They had just gone through a pretty rough fight. As troops from other Confederate States were rushed forward they met the Alabamians retreating and they started to yell "Flicker! Flicker!"(sound that a yellowhammer makes) at the boys from Alabama. The Alabama troops were chided and embarrassed pretty badly for running and retreating by their fellow Southern troops.
