Auburn's defense to a prospective athlete receiving an improper benefit will be composed of three parts: a. that Cam Newton didn't know his father solicited funds -- the most crucial part b. Newton didn't attend the school his father solicited funds from and c. no funds ever changed hands for Newton to attend school at Auburn.

It's not a bad defense given how woeful Auburn's options are, but it's a desperate one that is doomed to fail. Why? Because if accepted, the defense would open up a hole in the NCAA rulebook that you could drive a Brink's truck full of cash through. If the NCAA accepts this defense to its bylaws, it would mean that any recruit's family was free to shake down the schools that were recruiting him so long as the family claimed the recruit was unaware of it and the player didn't end up attending the school.

Think about how ridiculous this would be.

Grandmother's across the country could call up head coaches, demand hundreds of thousands of dollars from those coaches, and then there would be two options for the coach: a. the money comes, the solicitation works and everyone tries to keep quiet once the player arrives on campus or b. the money doesn't come and the player remains free to play somewhere else. Whereupon the grandmother calls a new school and repeats the solicitation.

Plainly, this argument is going to fail.

Agree

The argument has to fail... even if this were fantasy land and Auburn were innocent of any wrong-doing... you can't allow a system with this kind of massive loophole for paying kids

Seriously thanks for that recap because I haven't been around much and wasn't sure of the whole story.

And you still don't have it. It was funny though. The bammer is quite on top of all things Auburn though.

All you barners are going to be in for a ton of butthurt on TD if this explodes in your face.

Does Auburn have a site like TD, if so, why aren't you guys on it?

butthurt on TD? Wow, I'd be scared if I actually lived in "networld" and used words like "butthurt" and took internet threats of it seriously...as if it would have ANY effect on my life.

Cecil sold his son andrisked millions in NFL draft income so he could get his Church up to building codes. Every time I read that junk here on TD, I'd bust out laughing. It's funny how someone can even come up with such a moronic idea.

What's moronic is thinking the NCAA has any ability of taking money from his NFL earnings... He will be drafted high even if he were to have his wins vacated and heisman taken away.

If he lies to the FBI, he'll watch the draft wearing an orange jumpsuit

Clearly the longer Auburn is in denial, the worse this gets, and the greater the wrath of the nation, should the SEC or NCAA fail to step in.

Who wants to take an interest in a BCS Championship game, where everyone watching feels strongly the entire season will be voided.

We have been here before - it was called Southern Cal - you would think the powers that be, would have learned this by now.

Clearly, all those officials could not possible be all lying. It's also absurd to think that Newton the son, did not have a clue that Newton the father, was doing his bidding.

I hate it for you Auburn - I really do - but it's time to stop drinking the Koolaid. This is a damn shame, considering how their last undefeated team was screwed, but it seems that memory has really clouded the normally astute vision, of the usually reasonable Auburn fans.

The mind reels. Never meet with the FBI about anything.

Never.

I see the last update was about cam actually playing, but what about joe schad reporting yesterday on CFL that cecil newton admitted a pay-for-play plan was in place, but only for msu and not auburn?

So by your logic noone will or has ever asked for or recieved money to play in college, because they would never risk the millions they could earn in the NFL.

Guess what everyone thinks they can get away with it. Quit being so naive and open your eyes. There is never a time when there is this much smoke and no fire. I think it sucks, especially if AU had no part in it (which I doubt). But if Cam or his father asked and or recieved money he should and will be penalized as will AU.
