I would honestly pin any weakness the 2011 LSU D had on the offense. It wasn't exactly THAT hard to stop JJ9 and Jarrett lee in a one dimensional offense. Our run game was good, but the lack of an at least "good" offense showed itself on the BCS game.

Our D was jut flat out tired after our inept offense did nothing.

An offensive line coach was our Offensive coordinator..

OFFENSE
1. 2010 Auburn : 24.9%
2. 2013 Texas A&M : 24.0%
3. 2012 Texas A&M : 23.1%
4. 2012 Alabama : 21.1%
5. 2013 South Carolina : 20.2%
6. 2014 Alabama : 19.8%
7. 2013 Auburn : 19.5%
8. 2010 Alabama : 18.9%
9. 2013 Georgia : 18.7%
10. 2014 Auburn : 18.0%

DEFENSE
1. 2011 Alabama - 37.1%
2a. 2011 LSU - 27.8%
2b. 2012 Alabama - 27.8%
4. 2012 Florida - 23.6%
5. 2014 Alabama - 19.7%
6. 2013 Alabama - 19.3%
7. 2014 Ole Miss - 18.8%
8. 2012 LSU - 18.2%
9. 2012 South Carolina - 17.3%
10. 2011 Georgia - 16.5%

Kind of amazing that Auburn won 2 SECC's considering they didn't show up a single time in the Top 10 defenses.

Lawd I'm happy Muschamp came home.

Against common opponents. 2011 Bama defense was better. Mostly because of experience. Barron, Hightower, and Upshaw were grown arse men that had been wrecking shite since 2008. They under normal circumstances would have declared early with the rest of the 08ers like Ingram, Dareus, Julio etc. Barron and Hightower, both returned because of injuries and Upshaw to improve his stock. They were seasoned, talented players at 3 different levels.

lsu's best players were sophomores. Mathew, Reid, Mingo etc. Bama had the talent and experience because they were lucky to have some guys come back that normally would have been 3 and done.

The LSU defense played fine in that game. The offense was horrible.

statistically false.

Some statistics that aren't yards related.

Alabama 2011: 13 ints, 7 fumble recoveries, 30 sacks, 85 tackles for loss

LSU 2011: 18 ints, 12 fumble recoveries, 39 sacks, 106 tackles for loss

LSU also had 4 defensive players with 9 tds compared to Alabama's 4 defensive players with 4 tds.

Also adding playing 2 high powered offenses in Oregon and West Virginia, yards don't mean everything.

Best Teams Yards Per Play (Nationally) since 2008

1. 2011 Alabama - 3.32
2. 2008 USC - 3.61
3. 2008 TCU - 3.83
4. 2009 Texas - 3.84
5. 2012 FSU - 3.85
5. 2009 TCU - 3.89
6. 2009 Nebraska - 3.98
7. 2010 Boise State - 3.98
8. 2014 Clemson - 4.03
9. 2013 Michigan State - 4.04
10. 2009 Alabama - 4.08
11. 2008 Tennessee - 4.07
12. 2011 LSU - 4.08

3.32 yards per play is just stupid

Way to dispute the actual numbers.

You mean the actual numbers that actually say that Bama had the better defense or your convoluted attempt at claiming one cupcake's offense superiority over another cupcake's offense?

It is.
But at the same time, the best offense Alabama played was Arkansas, which was 29th best (ypg).

LSU also faced West Virgina (15th) and Oregon (4th).

I wonder how LSU's yards per play would have been if they had not faced high powered offenses like they did.
But what made LSU's D so great that year was they were big play machines.

Yea, I was about to say, Alabama and LSU both had great defenses that were really different. LSU pressured and forced mistakes and capitalized on them, and gave up some "big plays" (relative to Alabama's). Alabama's didn't make as many huge plays (which is typical of the system) but was a brick wall.

Call me a homer, but I maintain that the 2011 LSU defense was better. Statistically their numbers were not significantly different with Bama having a slight edge in a few categories.

While I think the 2011 LSU defense was a great one (and in my opinion, 2nd only to Bama that year), I think the numbers were a bit more significantly different than you do...and I think they had an edge in more than just a few categories:

Per the NCAA 2011 FBS Stats Website:

Rushing Defense
================
Bama #1 2.43 ypc, 72.15 ypg
LSU #4 2.74 ypc, 90.07 ypg

Passing Defense
===============
Bama #1 49.1 comp %, 4.34 ypa, 111.46 ypg
LSU #8 52.4 comp %, 5.49 ypa, 171.43 ypg

Total Defense
=============
Bama #1 3.32 ypp, 183.62 ypg
LSU #2 4.08 ypp, 261.5 ypg

Scoring Defense
===============
Bama #1 8.15 ppg
LSU #2 11.29 ppg

First Downs Allowed
====================
Bama #1 10.08 fdpg
LSU #3 15.14 fdpg

3rd Down Defensive Conversion Efficiency
========================================
Bama #1 24.46%
LSU #19 33.97%

Red Zone Defensive Efficiency
=============================
Bama #1 0.59
LSU #100 0.88

LSU did lead Bama in Turnovers Gained (#16 to #77) and Tackles for Loss (#11 to #16)...

That being said, statistics never tell the whole story...

quote:

The non-common opponents that LSU faced had much higher ranked offenses

Agree with you here as y'all played both Oregon and West Virginia that year...but, from a statistical standpoint, I don't think it skewed the numbers so much that LSU's defense would've overtaken Bama's that particular year...

Against common opponents Bama was better. Bama held the SEC champ to 0 pts and only 92 total yds
