Bama's 2011 Defense. GOAT?
You could argue for days about stats and schedules (and it seems you have in this thread). I think the GA Southern game was an anomaly for reasons already mentioned.
That defense had 14 players on the 2 deep already drafted with 2 more being draft eligible in 2015 NFL draft. It had 5 first rounders so far (DePriest has a shot in 2015, I think).
They may not be the GOAT, but I don't know that there has been a better one during the BCS era. They certainly played the best in the BCSNCG giving up only 92 yards and allowing the opponent to cross the 50 one (in the 4th qtr for 2 plays).

Actually I believe the '87 Auburn team was the first SEC team to finish the season with more passing yards than rushing yards.

No. This GOAT discussion has gotten out of hand. It is way too biased with the recent past and lacks perspective in many ways.
Reasons:
1. In TnMWorld, Alabama cannot be the best at anything. That logic does not compute.
2. In TnMWorld, the greatest defense of all time MUST be an auburn team. That is a given.
3. Random arbitrary timelines and stats can back all of this up. If the argument is too indefensible to keep a straight face, argue that determining the "greatest" is just too biased and vague to successfully make a case.
But if you COULD make a case, it would certainly be an auburn team. I mean, OBVIOUSLY...
FIFY.

Going by that logic, the 1966 Alabama team is better than both. They gave up 4 points per game, and had 6 shutouts.
The 1962 LSU team gave up 3.1 ppg with 6 shutouts, including shutting out #4 and undefeated Texas in the Cotton.
But talk about a different era:
LSU abandoned its conservative
“three yards and a cloud of
dust” offensive philosophy for a high flying
aerial assault on the Texas defense.
The Tigers had completed only 40
passes during the entire season. This
was another day, however, as LSU completed
13 of 21 pass attempts, two shy
of the record 15 completions set the previous
year by ‘Ole Miss.

The late 80's isn't as you had teams averaging 30 and 40 points a game.
You can go back further than that. LSU averaged over 32 ppg in '82, that same year FSU averaged 35 ppg and in 1980 had 31 ppg.
Oklahoma averaged 33 ppg in '77, 39 ppg in '78, and 34 ppg in '79.
Nebraska: 32 ppg in '76, 37 ppg in '78.
The difference wasn't in scoring, it was in pass vs rush.

How many times did LSU cross midfield before the final drive then?
Once?
It was either 0 or 1. Not much difference.

Yep, twice total.
They just had a replay yesterday on CST. What a game.

Two other defenses that I think were just as good, if not better, were the 2000 OU defense, and the 2005 Alabama defense. Both teams played harder schedules (offensively tougher schedule) and both had very tough units. The 2005 Alabama defense was disgusting, it just didn't have an offense to back it up.
Just IMO.
Just IMO.

Negative. LSU crossed the 50 one time in the entire game - in the 4th qtr. They crossed the 50 on an 18 yard scramble by JJ. They then lost 3 yards on a run, lost 5 yards on a false start, threw two incomplete passes, and fumbled on a sack by Dont'a Hightower on 4th & 18 from the Alabama 40.
