I saw this over on the Bama board from Roll Tide 1987 when I was wondering what they thought of Jeryl Brazil transferring over there and this is just incredible regarding the defensive stats of that 2011 Alabama team:

Where are you hearing these rumors?

vs. Arkansas: 226 total yards, only two sustained drives all game
@ Florida: 222 total yards, 9 first downs, all 10 points came on first two drives
vs. Vanderbilt: 190 total yards, 8 first downs, 0 points allowed

IIRC we either injured or knocked out the starting QB in each of these games.

I gained a ton respect for Tyler Wilson in that Arkansas game because he tried to stay in as long as he could while taking an absolute beating.

The GOAT defense doesn't surrender 341 yards to Georgia fricking Southern. Weak schedule against junior high offenses = great defense?

You're right dude. They sucked. Proved they weren't great against LSU.

Name a better defense in the last 30 years.

Would be difficult to find.
Outside of 30 years, the UA squad in 1975 was ridiculously stout. Gave up only 6pts per game.

Incidentally, the only game they lost that season was to Mizzou. Other than the 20-7 loss to the Tigers, the Crimson Tide didn't allow more than 10pts in any game the rest of the season.

We were also missing about half of our starting front seven to injury/suspension in a game against an option team. That, combined with the fact that our team was not taking them seriously, resulted in a bad game for our team against a vastly inferior opponent. But...to their credit...they were 9-1 and ranked #3 in the FCS when we played them.

How can you say that about a team that had zero points scored on them in the SEC championship game?

They are certainly in the discussion. The one thing that keeps them from being a stronger contender in the discussion is the schedule though. Possibly the weakest schedule an sec west team has played in a decade. I mean they only played one good team all year really.

The same thing was said about Alabama's defense in 1992. That Crimson Tide squad played only one team in the regular season that finished ranked (Tennessee). That's why Alabama was such a huge underdog going into the Sugar Bowl against Miami. People believed that defense was ultimately just smoke and mirrors.

Oh I know. The '92 team also played a very weak schedule. And actually barely beat msu and only put away a bad AU team with an int late. Then the seccg.

I really think that '11 D should be on a short list of best ever. It is just impossible to really stake a claim to them being goat because the schedule was too weak to give them a chance to prove it.

2003 LSU defense was better and a few of the black shirt defenses at Nebraska were better

Statistically speaking this is not the case. At least not in the last 30 years. The 2011 Alabama defense was the first defense to finish ranked #1 in the nation in all four major defensive categories since the late-80s.

The Sugar Bowl is why 92 is remembered how they are because Oliver's scheme was so genius. They were damn good all year, but that's what put them over the top in people's minds.

IMO the last 30 years is considered modern football. Statistically there have been better Ds. I think the 61 Bama D only gave up 2-3 touchdowns all season but if you go look at that team, the Dline only avged about 200lbs. Those 70s Ds were good, but they were still really small compared to the 80s-2000s.
