CLM could not have said this better.

Osborne followed Devaney or Zook followed Spurrier. A program isn't going to make a coach, way too many examples of this. Depends on who gets hired. From a LSU fan's perspective, I vote Alfred E. Newman.

Nice post brah. Your reasoning and use of examples has me convinced...

Thats it, when Nick is gone we might as well pack up and become UAB fans.

Bama collapses back into the steaming pile of Mike Shula dung that it was before. Will take 2 years to fully ripen though because saban wont leave the cupboard empty.

One could call this the Terry Bowden effect.

Isn't that where Auburn is now?

Well Alabama would be losing the best coach in the game today. Losing him would cause some natural down years and chances are Alabama won't have dominance they've managed to achieve in recent seasons

Will they just plug in another coach and keep rolling like LSU has done

Guys who might disagree:

Ron Zook - Florida
Bob Davie - Notre Dame
Frank Solich - Nebraska
Gomer Jones - Oklahoma
David McWilliams - Texas
Larry Coker - Miami
Kiffin/Dooley - Tennessee
Paul Hackett - Southern Cal

Even at premiere name programs where recruiting (and often other resources) are better than other places there is just no guarantee of success. If you don't have a great head coach in place your program will fall off

The point is, you don't know when he retires and you don't know who will be available at that time.

i dont know that saban was 'available' when we got him. we made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Of course you did. There's no chance he was getting paid more in the NFL and similarly no chance that he wasn't doing as well as he wanted in the NFL.

History also shows that saban will leave the cupboard stacked when it's time to retire

50/50 on that. Yes Miles did well at LSU - but his successor Bobby Williams had a bit more trouble at Michigan State (fired in three years). If Saban were to retire or leave Bama in the near future I expect he'd leave behind a lot of talent. If his health, ability, or priorities changed before he left Bama then we might see a different scenario.

Anyway, as the Larry Coker example shows, even the fullest cupboard imaginable doesn't mean sustainable success. Your new hire has to know how to manage a premier program successfully

Man, he is the definitive example of this. Went undefeated with Butch Davis' team then destroyed program in short order.

My favorite thing about Larry Coker is his first two years as head coach are probably a better two seasons than almost any of the coaches in the hall of fame can claim (from any two year window in their careers).

The guy was 24-1 with an undisputed national championship in the first year and a controversial OT loss in the NCG of the second year. His third year was a not too shabby 11-2 (but the trend downward was becoming more and more plausible)

Not interested enough to research it but who has the better SEC record in the last 20 yrs, Bama or Fla? But it is a bit of a stretch to say six yrs was an aberation. 1-2, mabe 3 yrs, but not 6. And in those 6 yrs, ULLLLM beat Saban on his home field as I recall. Being the most "elite" team in college football is cyclical...Fla.St. had a nice long run, Thug U in Miami,Texas, Fla., USC, Bama & LSU now. No one is going to agree with any one choice, so why don't you just enjoy your team for what it is now?

When you ask a question about maintaining dominance when Saban leaves, be prepared to get lots of different opinions. When someone answers false, you would swear someone just talked about an Alabama fans momma. Stop worrying about the inevitable and enjoy it now. And cappstone, no, I'm not young, I really don't care when Alabama was good and when they sucked. But like I said, I do look for them (Alabama) to fall off when Saban is gone. Honestly, anyone outside the bama blinders would agree.

I watched Gene Stallings have a run comparable to Saban's. Before the NCAA issues. 11-1 then 12-0 also undefeated championship, also an undefeated regular seaon with a 1 pt loss to UF in the SECCG.

Mike Price would've had success had he not been fired and Fran would have also. Without the NCAA LSU doesn't have the decade run they're on.
