You left out the part where the only people who go to osteopathic schools are people who can't get into the over 100 medical schools in the country. Honest question. Would you want one performing life threatening surgery on you or would you want an MD? A school as good as Auburn should not associate with a second rate program like this.

While I know where you are coming from, there is nothing wrong with a getting a D.O. Yes, the requirements to get into a school of osteopathic medicine are typically lower (MCAT scores of 25-26 instead of 29-30), you still have to be a very smart individual to gain acceptance. In many cases, a D.O. will treat you in the exact same manner that an M.D. would.

Not really surprising, but good news. Auburn has been talking about doing this for years. An extra med school in the state is needed. There is already a shortage of doctors and it only going to get worse in the near future.

I would rather see a real doctor and maybe have to wait a little longer than have the state flooded with "holistic" doctors who can't get into medical school.

I audit medical bills for a living (given these are for uninsured crime victims in texas) and I see just as many DO's as MD's and they get paid the exact same according to medicare's guidelines....

I didn't know that about the schools though

Let me guess. You are in DO school, are a DO, or have a close family member who is a DO.

I am neither of these. My dad was a urologist and I think you might be a little mistaken on what a D.O. is. definitely not trying to get into a debate about it on the SECr though

You do realize that a DO does an Internship and Residency standing side by side with that MD that you think is so different? Medical Schools are extremely competitive to get in. Top performers in med school become researchers and teachers. The "best" doctors are those that finish in the middle. I would not hesitate to use a DO that had proper training (and have known many).

Not really. I have several friends who are in DO school. They were the average chemistry and biology majors who would have gone to any MD school in the nation but no one would take them. There are 138 MD schools in this country. If you can't get in to one of those, I don't want a less intelligent DO operating on me.

Sure they will treat me the same way. But the quality of that treatment and their overall intelligence in the event that something goes wrong is what I care more about.

D.O. school, not med school. I'm sure many people have already mentioned this fact though.

You can't predict who will be the best Dr. Most of the highly intelligent kids in Medical School, aren't functional. Its like predicting your 5 star flops, when you see all these 3 stars in the NFL. Its not where you go, its what you do where you go. Yes, I know some DO's, and if I was having surgery, thats who I'd go too. Its about trust, when you go under the knife, not the plaque on the wall.

Did not know about the school in Dothan, but it is not accredited at this time. It should get accreditation. Auburn could have gone that route, but instead did what is best for the state and affiliated with an accredited institution.

While my experience with DO is good overall I have come to the realization that these are the kids that lacked the connections and political clout to be accepted at a lot of the medical schools in the country. Typical medical schools are the last to hang on to the GOB network of admissions. Most admissions at UMMC are "connected" kids, kids of UMMC MDs, politically connected kids and your typical terrorist subplotter types. DOs usually didn't go to the right prestigous prep schools or belong to all the undergrad organizations to have their applications accepted.

Has nothing to do with that. I was opposed to the one that is opening in Dothan as well. I'm against them in general. It does surprise me that AU would be willing to associate with one though.

I would be fine with a DO doing basic things for me like general medicine, etc. But there is no way in hell I would have one doing surgery unless it was an emergency. My life is too important to me to have someone rejected by 138 medical schools operating on it.
