From 2011:

quote:

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Jimmy Filler, a UAB booster, is a key figure in helping getting commitments for the suites in the proposed on-campus football stadium at UAB. He is one of 27 individuals or corporations who made a five-year, $100,000 commitment to lease a suite at the stadium.

Following is his full response after the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees chose to stop the project before it got under way:

"This is a sad day for UAB and the city of Birmingham. The new stadium would have revitalized the Southside to make UAB a complete university. I do not understand why the Board of Trustees turned this down.

"This decision was made totally by the Board of Trustees. People worked very hard with additional fund raising and a complete sellout of the 27 boxes. I know, I sold the last one.

"The practice field, when it rains a little, they must go over and use Birmingham-Southern's field. When they do get to practice it only lasts three hours. I'm very proud of UAB for admittance of 20 on your ACT scores. This is wonderful but very hard to bring a football recruiting class in with this high bar.

"They have a football recruiting budget which is one of the lowest in the country, not even enough money at times for a coach to rent a hotel room.

"The coaches office is full of rats and broken toilets and antiquated coaching tools. Legion Field would be fine if they improved the facilities so the kids after the game would be able to take a hot shower. Many times there is no hot water and they have dressing rooms like the 1930s.

"Recruiting is the lifeblood of a football program. If you were a recruit, would you under these miserable circumstances, want to come to UAB? Remember, you have to be a good scholar to get in.

"I spoke with Coach Bartow this morning and he told me to never give up. But he did remind me that I owe him two steak dinners that I bet we would have a new stadium. I'm also sorry that the father of UAB athletics will not see his last dream come true."

From 2006:

quote:

Everything came out in the open last week when the UAB Blazers of Conference USA were ready to hire LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher as their head coach. All that remained was ironing out the details. It was to be for $600,000 a year, most of which was going to be covered by some influential UAB supporters. But then the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama system (which includes the University of Alabama, UAB and UAH) stepped in and said that UAB could not hire Fisher. They claimed it was because of financial considerations, but that excuse doesn’t hold water since the bulk of Fisher’s salary was going to be covered by boosters.

Apparently, the Board of Trustees realized UAB was about to hire the most coveted assistant coach in the country. They realized It also could mean that UAB might wind up with a better coach than Alabama, and the idea panicked the Board of Trustees. They decided that couldn’t happen, so they stepped in and overstepped the boundaries of a Board. They took the hiring of UAB’s coach right out of UAB’s hands. Not only did they not allow UAB to hire Fisher, they then imposed their own handpicked candidate on UAB. They strongly suggested Neil Callaway, Georgia’s offensive coordinator, was the acceptable choice for UAB.

And they should thank us for letting them have Neil Callaway.

You wanted them to have football so bad, well go support it.

That is Alabama's job.

I am inclined to believe that UA profits financially from money that UAB generates.

I can't help but think Jimbo Fisher (a National Championship coach) is thanking his lucky stars right now that he was turned down for that shitshow of a job.

There's a song someone sang, "thank God for unanswered prayers."

That doesn't mean Alabama should subsidize an FBS football program for a satellite school that historically averaged ~10K fans/game.

still won't admit that uab football would be doing just fine and self sufficient if bama had not actively worked hard to prevent uab football from succeeding.

This is what every single thread on UAB devolves into. Auburn fans just cannot help themselves.

So, to the guy who asked why Alabama fans are so sick of this shite, let me present exhibit A.

Grew up in the 'Ham and going to Iron Bowls at Legion Field. At least half that stadium was orange and blue every time. Just an excuse to get out of a neutral site and get an advantage.

You are a liar. Show me ONE photo of the stadium with HALF Auburn fans and I will agree. You cannot do it.

Probably did not ever go to an iron bowl game either.

UAB fans talk a big game but have not shown that they will actually support the program when push comes to shove, as demonstrated by their abysmal attendance figures through the years.

And, we should force Jimbo Fisher to resign from FSU to take the UAB job because, by golly, UAB DESERVES THEIR FOOTBALL!!

With an on-campus facility and a decent coach, UAB will be self sufficient at the very least. I am an Auburn fan and grad. My interest in the program is because I live here in Bham. What's good for UAB is good for my city. I don't see why this is hard to understand? The Alabama BOT, is hindering UAB and this the city as a whole. Only the most obtuse Bama fans argue this.

The BOT built out UAB to make it what is today. We've re-hashed this 1,000X...Alabama's BOT is responsible for building UAB into what it is today...so tell me gain how the BOT hindered Birmingham?

Now tell us what Auburn has done for Birmingham?

Well shite dumbfrick, if I took away all of bamas facilties so they couldn't recruit, made 10 year old their coach, and made them play on a high school field in atmore, your arse wouldn't go watch them play.

If bama would have left them the frick alone, they would have a decent program, a decent stadium, and decent attendance.

Wtf is so hard for you idiots to understand?

I never thought I would see the day that an Auburn fan wanted to play in Legion Field again. You guys bitched about that worse than LSU fans bitch about the SEC office location.

Difference is they would be playing UAB and get a rent-a-win...not Alabama with Bear Bryant as coach and get a rent-an-arse kicking....
