Here are the top 10 most exciting cities in Alabama:

Auburn
Tuscaloosa
Jacksonville
Troy
Montevallo
Birmingham
Homewood
Tuskegee
Montgomery
Mobile

WTF

My thoughts after reading stupid comments in this thread:

1. Ive spent a fair amount of time working from five points south in birmingham. Its awesome. If I ever wanted to move closer to the fam, I could def see myself living downtown bham.
2. Auburn sucks unless you went to school there
3. Tuscaloosa also sucks unless you went to school there, but at least there is a sweet lake, several breweries, more shite to do, and not far from bham. So actually, its not that bad. Really just having to deal with Bama fans and ghetto are the negatives. But hey, hot bama chicks.
4. The vibe of Mobile is the most exciting, just walking around downtown is better than anywhere elses.
5. Oh homewood is separate? Yea, its exciting I guess around a few places. I mean, saw's is fricking awesome so, frick yea

Tuscaloosa has always enjoyed a real, vibrant, authentic music scene. Auburn on the other hand-just no

We don't have an amphitheater right in town to get some of the "bigger" acts that go to Ttown, but you're wrong. There's some good smaller bands from Auburn. Bama Gamblers, one of my favorites, was all AU students and plays all around SEC country all the time. Frats in Auburn hire some big name rappers a few times every year seems like. Rodeo is attracting some big country acts. Then the amphitheater in Alex City and Columbus are both not far away and get some decent acts.

I'm jealous that Phish or Widespread Panic are never going to come to town like Tuscaloosa, but there's good music around.

o your assessment of excitement is a place where you can get drunk, hear live music and meet sorority girls. You have to be that guy who stayed an undergraduate for 10 years.

So it seems you now agree with me that Tuscaloosa does in fact offer a much more substantial and diverse array of social options than Auburn does as part of the undergrad experience. That's all I was saying all along, glad we came to an agreement!

No, just more places to get drunk. When you sober up you are still in Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa > Auburn and TTown is pretty boring if you don't like to drink.

If you want cocaine, heroin, pills, whores and frat parties as an integral part of your college experience, then Tuscaloosa>>>Auburn.

If you are there to get an education, meet down-to-earth authentic people, and experience a campus with esprit de corps, Auburn >>>Tuscaloosa.

What a joke.

Mad props to you for defending your school in this aspect without getting so bitchy like a couple of the other posters. Of course some good music comes through Auburn. It's a good school with a large student body. I still maintain that even if you exclude those big amphitheatre shows, Tuscaloosa has and always has had more, and more diverse music options on a nightly basis than Auburn. There just aren't as many venues in Auburn. I think most people would ackowledge this as a fact but on this board who knows.

ETA: I just checked out Bama Gamblers as I've been away for a while but like to be aware of the acts from my home state- they sound great!

I'm not sure you even know what you are trying to say anymore. You asked me to qualify my statement that the undergrad social experience in Tuscaloosa exceeded that of Auburn, introducing the word "exciting" as the barometer.

You are now openly agreeing that the music, bars, fraternities, and culinary options are better in Tuscaloosa, but those are to be discounted because people drink. I'm not sure if you are an ultra conservative type or what, but I have a newsflash for you: college kids like to go to bars and restaurants, go see live music, or be in fraternities to meet people and have fun, whether they are drinking or not. How do you measure social options at a place? What are these alternatives that you fail to specify? I'm preparing myself for your obscure, non-specific, impossible-to-prove, overly generalized response along the lines of "hanging with authentic people doing cool things instead of coke."

If you want a couple of other Alabama acts check out Anderson East and Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires (Lee started off with Tuscaloosa's The Dexateens).

I'm sure that you're aware of St. Paul & The Broken Bones, but just in case you're not I'll drop their name too.

The criteria used to determine the rankings gave points for having a younger population, as well as population density, so that likely explains the emphasis on college towns.

Very familiar with Lee Bains, Dexateens, and st Paul. Will check out East-looks like i could catch him next week at this fabulous dive bar here in Denver. Thanks for that.

I take it you're familiar with the Banditos? love their new album, been wanting to check them out.

I'm not which is weird because I'm usually on top of the Birmingham music scene in particular. I just moved back to town after a year and a half though so maybe I've been out of touch.

I like what I'm hearing

This thread was accurate 10 years ago. Tuscaloosa is night and day different now. But to each their own.

I don't mind Auburn. Small college town. I like it there. I like Ttown too but it's beginning to grow too much for me.

As far as Birmingham, I wish the Cahaba would swallow that place. The ONLY place I've ever been to that was a bigger shitehole was Memphis. I lived there for a few months for work and I was staying inside the perimeter. Cars broken into, sirens all during the night, prostitution, nasty.I was there to help get a new project for our company of the ground and we had to install airport metal detectors to keeps knives and guns out and to keep people from stealing equipment. It was quite honestly the crappiest place I've ever seen. I actually moved to Olive Branch MS to get out of there. I hate B'ham with a passion but I wouldn't spend another night in Memphis Tennessee.

Auburn doesn't have a "we like to keep our city clean" type of cleanliness. Auburn has a "none of this stuff has been here long enough to get dirty" type of cleanliness. There is a difference.

This is a fair statement.

I think Mobile might be the most boring city in the entire state. Especially for it's size and population. Upon driving into the city limits I immediately want to take a nap.

Meh, I think both are fun in their respective ways, but there really isn't much to do outside of the colleges unless you want to get drunk, shop, or walk around some parks.

Auburn has a really nice set up with their downtown and university connected. College Street is pretty fun also.

For Tuscaloosa, I have no idea why anyone intends on going to the Strip anymore. Temerson Square is the better entertainment district. Even its own "bar-cade" and better live music.

Just from my perspective, but I'd say Tuscaloosa has a better music scene. Even if you mark out Tuscaloosa's amphitheater that has had bands like Widespread, Phish, Umphrey's McGee, My Morning Jacket, Dave Mathews Band, etc.. The Druid City Music Hall has had some great bands come play lately. Hell Breaking Benjamin just did an unplugged concert at it. Aaron Lewis from Staind played.

Also recently had the Druid City Music festival throughout all of June that included live music every Saturday, and allowed you to bring your own alcohol

They're both fun, but it literally is no comparison with either cities when you compare it to the likes of Athens, Boulder CO, Knoxville, even Fayetteville Arkansas.

I didn't add golf either because not everyone plays. I've played at the RTJ course in Auburn and Ol' Colony I'm Tuscaloosa and they're both awesome.
