Athens, Georgia named number one college football town in America by expert panel
quote:
The city the Georgia Bulldogs are lucky enough to call home has been named the #1 College Football Town in America, according to a poll by Athlon Sports.
After assembling a panel of ten sports personalities and experts, which included a CBS college football analyst, SiriusXM on-air talent, and writers for organizations like Fox Sports, Yahoo!, and the Associated Press, Athens, Georgia appeared on nine of the ten ballots, receiving three first place votes for a total of 62/100 points to edge out the cities of Madison, Wisconsin and Austin, Texas.

I wouldn't debate that. Spend a lot of time there and love it, even with all of the UGA fans.

Impossible. No lake and you can't see the mountains.

lol it is def possible,
because a lot of sports fans like drinking, and their criteria for best college town is number of bars nearby.
i would like to see a list of the 80 bars that are claimed to be in the downtown district. i only counted 25 or so using google maps.
seems like if there are 80 bars being supported in downtown athens, they are all selling alcohol to underage students. that is a lot of bars even for a colelge town.

Unless you've personally been to Athens, your argument is irrelevant. Google maps isn't the answer.
As for the bar scene goes, you should realize that UGA has a large graduate school, plus hipsters and townies from all over the region and country come for the shows. Athens is like an Asheville. It's very eclectic and energetic with a very liberal town feel. Once people show up, a lot of them wind up staying. Athens-Clarke county is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, coming in at #80 (out of over 4,000 U.S. Counties). The population is currently around 125,000...
I know a lot of people that came to Athens from all over just to live the college town life without going to college. I graduated in 2013.

Lol, no. Find me a peach stand or peanut field within a rocks throw of Asheville. Or a redneck.

Losing the big ones makes a town great? Will have to remember that.

there is nothing electric about Asheville unless you are a hippie leftwing person who wants to protest something and particpate in the drum circle on Friday night downtown. the town has a ton of homeless people in the downtown area as well.
google maps usually indicates what restaurants/ bars / stores etc are in a city. i searched for bars and zoomed in on the downtown area and counted 25 or so bars. that is a lot of bars in its own right. i just don't buy there are 80 bars in that downtown area. maybe in the entire athens area.

I used to work at Mount Mitchell State Park... I know Asheville. The entire area surrounding it is redneck. Much less hillbilly.
