Until he has a consistent, efficient QB that isn't a turnover machine, we can't say one way or the other.

This is a really massive oversimplification of the recruiting picture.

Recruiting isn't just where your class ranks; because more often than not -- your recruiting ranking doesn't take into account whether you're just stock-piling talent, or whether you're actually filling needs.

One of the biggest complaints fans have about Muschamp was that while he could recruit really well; he wouldn't do a good job of recruiting for the big picture. He would stockpile talent at specific positions, while neglect it at others. He had an eye for talent in certain places, and had no idea what actual talent looked like in others. He typically didn't do a good job of filling needs; even when we may have thought he did, the talent wouldn't pan out (somewhat his fault because it's his job to look at athletes and determine whether they can mold them or not).

All the stars and recruiting rankings you can find won't tell the real story of how depleted the Offensive line was. They didn't have enough bodies for the spring game last season. He was forced to find a O lineman from Hofstra. Who by the way started for the Gators. Muschamp left the Offensive side of the ball virtually talentless.

We also had a walk-on bartender and I think pizza delivery guy play in the Spring just so we could hold actual practices.

Meyer inherited a team that would eventually end up having a number of all sec players.

He inherited one of the best WR groups at UF in the last 20 years, a solid OL, UF's career passing leader at QB... and the defense was obviously loaded.

The 2005 team, in retrospect, underachieved.

The 2015 team had Will Grier, a RS freshman, and Treon Harris, who was terrible. That's nothing CLOSE to what Meyer had at QB.

The RB situation was about equal, but the WR and TE situation was worse than 2005. McElwain also had the worst offensive line unit returning to Florida since the 1992 unit.

The defense was good - because that was the only thing Muschamp could fricking recruit, and it was comparable to 2005.

Muschamp got lucky in 2012 just like he had bad luck in the season where he didn't even make a bowl game. Fans didn't ever seem to back Muschamp because the offense always looked like it didn't even practice . The defense did good but it was good before he got there.

I am not sold on coach Mac. He needs to improve on recruiting on both sides of the ball but he does seem to do a good job with QBs. He is recruiting good talent and got some experienced ones to fill in till the young guys are ready. The next 2 recruiting classes and seasons on the field will tell a lot about coach Mac.

I'm not. In fact, I think he is very average and will be fired within three years. He may last four but i doubt it. You will need to be a great recruiter (even in Florida) to contend for championships.

Do some of you realize that Mac was forced to start 2 true freshman and a non-SEC caliber transfer from Fordham on the offensive line last season? Add in Treon Harris playing quarterback, the most mediocre RB in the SEC the last few years in Kelvin Taylor, and one true offensive playmaker (Callaway), and it's a surprise he won more than 5 games last year.

Why would a South Carolina fan start a thread asking if any team is sold on their coach.

CNB, I would be more worried about Muschamp than I would be concerned with Coach Mac. Muschamp will do well for the defense, but the offense is his problem.

CoachMac took Offensive and defensive players Boom couldn't win with and won with them despite Treon Harris and the implosion the QB issues caused on the team.

Why would anyone be sold on a coach after one season? Has Gus Malzahn taught us nothing?

Truth is Grier's quick trigger masked a lot of offensive deficiencies last year. A thin and inexperienced offensive line, few reliable threats at receiver, solid but limited running back corps, transition to a new scheme, etc. Once he was gone, it all fell apart offensively and Muschamp's defense (yes, it was his defense) had to pick up the slack. When you have a 5'10 QB playing behind a patchwork line in a new system he's hardly suited for, there's only so much coaching magic you can muster.

Yeah I bet you hated Muschamp in 2012 lol

That was actually a very stressful season to watch. Last year's team was way more enjoyable to watch and was a title contender until Grier got popped.

Grier's impact to the Florida offense was huge because he was the first relatively competent QB we've had in a long time. He showed what an offense could actually look like with decent QB play.

But his actual production has been kind of overrated. He wasn't very good against Kentucky. He wasn't very good against Missouri. He was terrible in the 1st half against Tennessee. He really only had 1.5 great games as a QB against above average competition.

I'm not "sold" on McElwain, but am excited to see his emphasis on recruiting playmakers on offense. Also excited to see him develop some QB's. If he wins the East this year again, I think most UF fans will be extremely pleased in the overall direction of the program.

The fact that he had a +.500 record with Treon Harris at QB is good enough for me. I think he will be a very good coach in time, but not on the Spurrier/Meyer level. Florida fans have been spoiled with those two.

I guess you never watched Treon Harris attempt to play QB.

The way McElwain handled Will Grier after his suspension gives me confidence in his judgement. His past performance at Alabama gives me confidence in his ability.
