People give us shite over 1964 and 1973 but they outright refused to play in bowls until the late 60s.
Why should they have started playing Bowl Games? Even when they win a Bowl Game supposedly for the NC, the other team claims the NC anyway.

Are all just a notch below the Tier 1 programs but are still among the elitest of the elite.

Ohio State clearly does. Almost identical merits to Oklahoma

Notre Dame's coach committed negligent homicide. Bama could stay on NCAA probation until the end of time and still have the moral high ground.

Not only does Ohio State have nearly identical positives..they do not have OU's negatives. OU went the whole decade of the 90's with barely an above .500 record and several losing seasons.

In fact..of all the top tier programs..OSU has avoided down periods. Texas is on a bender now and had the McWilliams and Mackovic years..Bama had the Debose and Shula years, ND had a post Holtz to Kelly funk, and Southern Cal suffered through some bad Larry Smith and Paul Hackett years...Nebraska hasn't been Nebraska since Osborne..and Michigan is just now climbing out of a lonf mediocre or less span.

Lemme know when tOSU wins 47 straight and has two dynasties or 5 heismans. Then you can put them in the same tier as OU.

How hard is that in your conference? Moreover, there was a long dry spell from the early 80s to the late 90s in which the Buckeyes more a top fifteen program than elite.

He's right though. Ohio State has had a remarkable run of hof coaches going back to the 50s (Woody, Earl Bruce, John Cooper, Tressel, and Urbz).

At least 3 times. The one in 1999 was a doozy. It involved women giving gifts to the athletes. LINK

quote:

During a lengthy period of time which extended from the summer of 1994 through January 1998, a young woman provided numerous and exorbitant gifts to Notre Dame football student-athletes and friends. Most of the gifts were provided during the romantic relationships the young woman had with several Notre Dame student-athletes, and, in the particular circumstances of this case, were considered not to be violations of NCAA legislation. Moreover, many of the gifts and benefits were provided to student-athletes prior to June 22, 1995 before the young woman became a representative of the university's athletics interests.

However, subsequent to June 22, 1995 after the young woman had become a representative of the university’s athletics interests, the gifts and benefits provided to student-athletes with whom the woman was not romantically involved were extra benefits and were considered violations of NCAA legislation. The committee found this case to be "major" in nature because of the length of time during which these violations occurred, the extravagant nature of the gifts and benefits provided to Notre Dame football student athletes by the individual, the competitive advantage gained by Notre Dame and the fact that the violations were neither isolated nor inadverten

Anyone who is truly honest knows that this discussion is about how the teams stack up from 2 on down, because for now Alabama is number one, like The Celtics, The Yankees, UCLA basketball, Etc.

This is true. In fact Bama has built in a cushion of at least a decade of mediocre play in a post Saban world while others would have to win 5 championships or more. Depressing but true.

Bama was ahead of notre dame before saban ever came. Bama got there despite the football establishment being heavily, heavily biased to northern and western schools. Most people on this board can only remember the south running college football as it does now, but pre bcs the system was pretty much rigged in favor of northern schools.
