What I foresee is early in the day I will remember I'm in my 30's and take it easy, have some good IPA's, enjoy some good food but I have a feeling as the beers get going I will end up in this Nowhere bar. I always start with the best of intentions, and the night ends with me in a dive bar. Thank you, my wife will not appreciate the suggestion

age is simply a number. If you wanna get trashed then get trashed, it's fun.
Also, if you're near nowhere bar you're near Little Italy. It's not going to win any awards, but if you're looking for textbook college town eats, go there. Pizza slice as big as your head for like $2, massive subs for a little over $5, and beer pitchers for about $5 as well. And all of it is damn good.

Yeah but the problem is the three day hangover.

drink a water or 2 during the night
drink a full bottle of pedialyte before bed
Smoke upon waking
what hangover?

That shite doesn't work anymore when you are 40 and I quit smoking twenty years ago.
I'm of the just fricking power through it school, but I try to avoid it whenever possible.

yeaaaah I know what you mean, I won't pretend that they definitely get to you more now than as a 20something.
Still though, sometimes you just kinda feel like getting absolutely rip roaring trashed.

World Famous has great food and drinks. The menu is small, but everything is good, and it's inexpensive. People love their chicken and waffle club.
Trappeze, The Globe both have good beer selections and good food. Last Resort is a good place as well.
Don't know what time the game is on Saturday, but if you do plan to go to Creature Comforts I think that they are open from 1-4pm Saturdays. Better than Terrapin and downtown and close to a lot of the places to eat that others have recommended. If you like sour beers at all, Athena is awesome!
If you are around the 5 Points area prior to or after the game, The Pine is good. Cali n Titos on Lumpkin and right next to campus is delicious!
Enjoy!

Came to mention Little Italy. To this guy, the best effing meatball sub that you can get at 2am (honestly, it might be my favorite anywhere anytime, but particularly valid late at night).
Others have mentioned that I would second:
Transmetropolitan: Havent' been here since shortly after I graduated but assuming no decline, this was a favorite spot. Great calzones/pizzas
Last Resort: Has been probably a year or so since I've been, but for slightly fancier entrees at mid-price for a college town, this place could not be beat. Also, desserts are typically fantastic.
The Grill: Not feeling late night meatball parm? Head here and get a greasy burger. Make sure to get the fries (massive crinkle cut) with feta dip. Wash it down with a delicious shake.
Trappeze: Great Food/Beer combination. If the lady likes a good beer you cannot go wrong.
Keba Spitfire Grill - Sadly, one of my favorite places while living in Athens ole Achim's K Bob has closed. The old location was great (close to Stegeman) and the food was top notch. If you're on the other side of town at any point though, Keba is a good re-imagination with a less hole in the wall feel.
To address the beer conundrum that seems to be happening...
A brewer here myself and I know guys at both places. Good for different reasons
Terrapin: Classic Athens, Known quantity, great beers favoring the "hop bomb" variety. Most known for the Rye Pale Ale and Hopsecutioner, with more limited varieties like Big Hoppy Monster, Rye Squared, etc. (you can see a trend here). They do usually have at least one non-hoppy variety, but really pretty targeted beer selection. If they have a wake-n-bake beer varietal at the time, usually very good.
Creature Comforts: Nouveau Athens. Giant Pro... They're in downtown. Followed closely by the next pro... they have the best beer in the state. Tropicalia is hands down the best beer produced in Georgia IMO, but definitely the best IPA. As others have stated, Koko Bunny is great, if you like sours, the Athena Berliner Weisse is a nice mellow take on the style.
I'd argue that from a "diversity" standpoint, CC does a much better job at hitting different marks. If you just want a quantity of beers to try, Terrapin probably will have more available options, but many feel like "variants" of the same thing.
If I had to pick, I'd check out the CC Brewery, and just check out Trappeze while there as they're likely to have whatever the limited seasonal variety is for Terrapin. You can always grab a Rye or Hopsecutioner at a random bar in Athens.

Not nearly as good as it used to be, I have no idea what happened.
This... was VERY weird. Used to be a phenomenal beer. Something changed.

Man I hadn't thought of fries and feta from The Grill in forever.
The subs at Little Italy are awesome, I always thought the pizza was pretty bad. Transmet is good, just got sick of it. I always liked Amici too.

Athens has one of the truly great downtown/bar/live music scenes for a city its size anywhere. It's downtown is everything I hope downtown Tuscaloosa aspires to and works to one day become. Totally being serious. Downtown Athens is what every college town should aspire to.
