Keep in mind that Houston was cheating on an SMU type level back then and still couldn't hang.

There were 2 teams in the SWC on a yearly basis. Arkie and Texas. Houston in the late 70's had a few legit national teams, Baylor would sneak up every now and again, TT would get to 6 wins on occasion, A&m would usually be tough but not yearly. SMU had a moment from 80-84 but it was pretty much a two team race every year.

True...and as hogminer pointed out, Houston and SMU were cheating.

...and still couldn't hang.

All hail Arkansas. Not only were they a bastion of morality, they were the second best team in the SWC forever.

Bless your hearts.

We had some good years in the SWC but what I liked the most about the SWC was leaving it.

SMU has some...interesting national title claims from the early 80s.

Everyone in the SWC was caught by the NCAA cheating in football except Arkansas and Baylor.

Some where better at it than others in the 80s, for example, aggy boosters bought Eric Dickerson a gold Trans Am to drive to SMU.

Switzer, for example, waited until they were on campus to hand out the TAs.

LSU has done nothing that FSU couldn't Do in a hypothetical situation

Well FSU is by far the most talented team in the acc, even after Miami moved into the the conference. LSU is not. FSU even likes to lose to nc state and wake forrest at times. That would be like Bama losing to Vandy.

You might also want to note that UH was only in the SWC from 1977 on. So, when they weren't the champions they were second place 5 times. Wow! They sure kicked Araknsas aside after they joined.

You might want to ask your father what happened back then. Arkansas owned Houston too.
Ark. vs. Houston 1977-1991
Listen, Arkansas was far and away the most appealing team from the SWC not named Texas during the expansion talks in the late 80s. Football was far and away the money maker like it is today and Arkansas and Texas were the only teams that were consistent winners. total wins 1950-1989It also helped that Nolan's basketball Hogs were starting to roll and the baseball team had been to the CWS in 79-85-87-89.

Also, ACC teams were really bad back then. FSU basically played a schedule of cupcakes, with the exceptions of GT and Clemson
how is that different from today?

Miami will probably be good again at some point.

I'm really not sure. Today's ACC has several winning teams and puts players in the NFL. Looking back at AP polls from around '92, there were more ACC teams in them then I recall. I just remember the ACC being all basketball back then, outside of GT or Clemson having a good team ever so often. I also remember people complaining about FSU having a cakewalk in regular season games, outside of playing Florida and Miami, and I was one of them. They may not have been as bad as I remember, though.

NC State has a lot more talent than Vandy.

The years Wake beat FSU, Wake was a ranked team. There was at least once SEC program interested in hiring Wake's coach at the time, Arkansas I believe.

Until the past 2-3 seasons, ACC was Va Tech's conference the decade before. Not FSU's.

Wake might have beat them another year. They won our division and the ACC one year, I assumed they beat FSU that year

Wake beat them 30-0 in 2006. They beat FSU in 07, 08, 11 as well.

Wake was a solid program for about 7 years. People have short memories, or they never played Wake during that time
