Which schools turned down the SEC and where did Arkansas and SC fall in the pecking order?

Arkansas and Texas was offered.

Texas was told they couldn't go with out aggy and Baylor who did not receive an offer.

FSU was then offered, but Bowden was scare.

Carolina was then offered because they had no ties to a conference.

Source: Frank Broyles.

FWIW Arkansas turned down an invite to join the big 8 in the early 70s.

Google why Florida State declined to join the SEC and you will read how their past "greatest" coach ever, was scared to join the SEC. I love that they're in a conference that spans hundreds of miles. Hey FSU enjoy your two year trips to Penn. and NY. Ask any Ga. Tech fan if they screwed up by leaving the SEC. The ACC is on the brink of existence.

For its part, the SEC wasn’t going to sit idly on the sidelines. On May 31, 1990, the SEC presidents voted to authorize expansion, identifying six schools as potential members: Texas, Texas A&M, Florida State, Miami, South Carolina and Arkansas.

texsa and A&M "couldn't" leave behind the other texas SWC schools.
Honestly I think the SEC ended up with the 3 it should have out of those. Florida state (now) and Texas are great programs but FSU adds little beyond UF, especially since today is so TV user driven, and texas isn't a cultural fit, relative to A&M.

In 1990 taking the top two Texas programs and adding the other top Florida programs seemed like great options, but in the new Subscriber paradigm it worked out perfect.

It was. But these things take time to get all the pieces into place. 1992 was when they were ready to start.

I'm not sure they were ever officially offered, but there was also interest in Miami and I think they basically turned us down to go to the Big East.

We owe LSU for our invitation, because it was their AD who nominated us.

Also, ACC teams were really bad back then. FSU basically played a schedule of cupcakes, with the exceptions of GT and Clemson.

WRONG. The SEC has never really been interested in the Univ of New Jersey @ Coral Gables. First of all...a small private school with no stadium of its own, no $$ in its bank account and very poor attendance with non revenue sports almost never attended and not funded. The school is located in Miami Fl...have any of you been there in the last 15 years? Graffitti on walls, trash cans overturned at condos, bulletproof glass everywhere, two armed guards at a lot of Publix supermarkets. Its a sewer hole. The current language is NewYorkese and Columbianadrug. Go to Liberty City...very scarey in daylight and at night suicidal.

Ann Richards was governor, and a Baylor alum. She saved that program.

Same with Clemson. Some back channels were used but dropped before they were on the radar.
